Chapter 1

1:1In the beginning Elohim created the heaven and the earth.
1:2And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the deep, and the Spirit of Elohim moved upon the waters.
1:3Then Elohim said, Let there be light:And there was light.
1:4And Elohim saw the light that it [was] good, and Elohim separated the light from the darkness.
1:5And Elohim called the Light, Day,and the darkness, he called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
1:6Again Elohim said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters:and let it separate the waters from the waters.
1:7Then Elohim made the firmament, and separated the waters, which were under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament:and it was so.
1:8And Elohim called the firmament Heaven. So the Evening and the morning were the second day.
1:9Elohim said again, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear:and it was so.
1:10And Elohim called the dry land, Earth, and he called the gathering together of the waters, Seas:and Elohim saw that it [was] good.
1:11Then Elohim said, Let the earth bud forth the bud of the herb, that seeds seed, the fruitful tree, which bears fruit according to his kind, which has his seed in itself upon the earth:and it was so.
1:12And the earth brought forth the bud of the herb, that seeds seed according to his kind, also the tree that bears fruit, which has his seed in itself according to his kind:and Elohim saw that it [was] good.
1:13So the evening and the morning were the third day.
1:14And Elohim said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven, to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years.
1:15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth:and it was so.
1:16Elohim then made two great lights:the greater light to rule the day,and the lesser light to rule the night:he also made the stars.
1:17And Elohim set them in the firmament of the heaven, to shine upon the earth,
1:18And to rule in the day,and in the night, and to separate the light from the darkness:and Elohim saw that it [was] good.
1:19So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
1:20Afterward Elohim said, Let the waters bring forth in abundance every creeping thing that has life:and let the fowl fly upon the earth in the open firmament of the heaven.
1:21Then Elohim created the great whales, and every thing living and moving, which the waters brought forth in abundance according to their kind, and every feathered fowl according to his kind:and Elohim saw that it [was] good.
1:22Then Elohim blessed them, saying, Bring forth fruit and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl multiply in the earth.
1:23So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
1:24Moreover Elohim said, Let the earth bring forth the living thing according to his kind, cattle, and that which creeps, and the beast of the earth, according to his kind:and it was so.
1:25And Elohim made the beast of the earth according to his kind, and the cattle according to his kind, and every creeping thing of the earth according to his kind:and Elohim saw that it [was] good.
1:26Furthermore Elohim said, Let us make man in our image according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea,and over the fowl of the heaven, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over every thing that creeps and moves on the earth.
1:27Thus Elohim created the man in his image:in the image of Elohim created he him:he created them male and female.
1:28And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, Bring forth fruit and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it,and rule over the fish of the sea,and over the fowl of the heaven, and over every beast that moves upon the earth.
1:29And Elohim said, Behold, I have given to you every herb bearing seed, which is upon all the earth, and every tree, wherein is the fruit of a tree bearing seed:that shall be to you for meat.
1:30Likewise to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the heaven, and to every thing that moves upon the earth, which has life in itself, every green herb shall be for meat:and it was so.
1:31And Elohim saw all that he had made, and lo, it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Chapter 2

2:1Thus the heavens and the earth [were] finished, and all the host of them.
2:2For in the seventh day Elohim ended his work which he had made, and the seventh day he rested from all his work, which he had made.
2:3So Elohim blessed the seventh day,and sanctified it, because that in it he had rested from all his work, which Elohim had created and made.
2:4These [are] the generations of the heavens and of the earth, when they [were] created, in the day that YHWH Elohim made the earth and the heavens,
2:5And every plant of the field, before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field, before it grew:for YHWH Elohim had not caused it to rain upon the earth, neither was there a man to till the ground,
2:6But a mist went up from the earth, and watered all the earth.
2:7YHWH Elohim also made the man of the dust of the ground, and breathed in his face breath of life, and the man was a living soul.
2:8And YHWH Elohim planted a garden Eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had made.
2:9(For out of the ground made YHWH Elohim to grow every tree pleasant to the sight, and good for meat:the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and of evil.
2:10And out of Eden went a river to water the garden, and from there it was divided, and became into four heads.
2:11The name of one [is] Pishon:the same compasses the whole land of Havilah, where [is] gold.
2:12And the gold of that land [is] good:there [is] Bdellium, and the Onyx stone.
2:13And the name of the second river [is] Gihon:the same compasses the whole land of Cush.
2:14The name also of the third river [is] Hiddekel:this goes toward the East of Asshur:and the fourth river [is] East)
2:15Then YHWH Elohim took the man,and put him into the garden of Eden, that he might dress it and keep it.
2:16And YHWH Elohim commanded the man, saying, You shall eat freely of every tree of the garden,
2:17But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it:for in the day that you eat thereof, you shall die the death.
2:18Also YHWH Elohim said, It is not good that the man should be himself alone:I will make him a help meet for him.
2:19So YHWH Elohim formed of the earth every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heaven, and brought them to the man to see how he would call them:for however the man named the living creature, so [was] the name thereof.
2:20The man therefore gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field:but for Adam found he not a help meet for him.
2:21Therefore YHWH Elohim caused a heavy sleep to fall upon the man,and he slept:and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in stead thereof.
2:22And the rib which YHWH Elohim had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her to the man.
2:23Then the man said, This now [is] bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall [be] called woman, because she [was] taken out of man.
2:24Therefore shall man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.
2:25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Chapter 3

3:1Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field, which YHWH Elohim had made:and he said to the woman, Yes, has Elohim in deed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
3:2And the woman said to the serpent, We eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3:3But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden, Elohim has said, You shall not eat of it,neither shall you touch it,lest you die.
3:4Then the serpent said to the woman, You shall not die at all,
3:5But Elohim does know, that when you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
3:6So the woman (seeing that the tree [was] good for meat, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to [be] desired to get knowledge) took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,and gave also to her husband with her,and he did eat.
3:7Then the eyes of them both [were] opened, and they knew that they [were] naked, and they sewed fig tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches.
3:8Afterward they heard the voice of YHWH Elohim walking in the garden in the cool of the day,and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of YHWH Elohim among the trees of the garden.
3:9But YHWH Elohim called to the man,and said to him, Where [are] you?
3:10Who said, I heard your voice in the garden,and [was] afraid:because I [was] naked,therefore I hid myself.
3:11And he said, Who told you, that you [were] naked? Have you eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?
3:12Then the man said, The woman which you gave to [be] with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
3:13And YHWH Elohim said to the woman, Why have you done this? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me,and I did eat.
3:14Then YHWH Elohim said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you [are] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field:upon your belly shall you go,and dust shall you eat all the days of your life.
3:15I will also put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall break your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
3:16To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your sorrows, and your conceptions. In sorrow shall you bring forth children, and your desire shall [be] subject to your husband, and he shall rule over you.
3:17Also to Adam he said, Because you have obeyed the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, (whereof I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it) cursed [is] the earth for your sake:in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life.
3:18Thorns also, and thistles shall it bring forth to you,and you shall eat the herb of the field.
3:19In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return to the earth:for out of it [were] you taken, because you [are] dust, and to dust shall you return.
3:20(And the man called his wives name Hevah, because she was the mother of all living)
3:21To Adam also and to his wife did YHWH Elohim make coats of skins, and clothed them.
3:22And YHWH Elohim said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil. And now lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life and eat and live forever,
3:23Therefore YHWH Elohim sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the earth, whence he [was] taken.
3:24Thus he cast out man,and at the East side of the garden of Eden he set the Cherubims, and the blade of a sword shaken, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Chapter 4

4:1Afterward the man knew Hevah his wife, which conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have obtained a man by YHWH.
4:2And again she brought forth his brother Abel, and Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain was a tiller of the ground.
4:3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought an oblation to YHWH of the fruit of the ground.
4:4And Abel also himself brought of the first fruits of his sheep, and of the fat of them, and YHWH had respect to Abel, and to his offering,
4:5But to Cain and to his offering he had no regard:wherefore Cain [was] exceeding wroth, and his countenance fell down.
4:6Then YHWH said to Cain, Why [are] you wroth? And why [is] your countenance cast down?
4:7If you do well, shall you not [be] accepted? And if you do not well, sin lies at the door:also to you his desire shall [be] subject, and you shall rule over him.
4:8Then Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
4:9Then YHWH said to Cain, Where [is] Abel your brother? Who answered, I cannot tell. [Am] I my brothers keeper?
4:10Again he said, What have you done? The voice of your brothers blood cries to me from the earth.
4:11Now therefore you [are] cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive your brothers blood from your hand.
4:12When you shall till the ground, it shall not henceforth yield to you her strength:a vagabond and a runagate shall you be in the earth.
4:13Then Cain said to YHWH, My punishment [is] greater, than I can bear.
4:14Behold, you have cast me out this day from the earth, and from your face shall I be hid,and shall be a vagabond, and a runagate in the earth, and whoever finds me, shall slay me.
4:15Then YHWH said to him, Doubtless whoever slays Cain, he shall [be] punished sevenfold. And YHWH set a mark upon Cain, lest any man finding him should kill him.
4:16Then Cain went out from the presence of YHWH,and dwelt in the land of Nod toward the East of Eden.
4:17Cain also knew his wife, which conceived and bare Enoch:and he built a city, and called the name of the city by the name of his son, Enoch.
4:18And to Enoch [was] born Irad, and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methushael, and Methushael begat Lamech.
4:19And Lamech took him two wives:the name of the one [was] Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
4:20And Adah bare Jabal, who was the father of such as dwell in the tents, and of such as have cattle.
4:21And his brothers name was Jubal, who was the father of all that play on the harp and organs.
4:22And Zillah also bare Tubal-, who wrought cunningly every craft of brass and of iron:and the sister of Tubal- [was] Naamah.
4:23Then Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech:hearken to my speech:for I would slay a man in my wound, and a young man in my hurt.
4:24If Cain shall [be] avenged seven fold, truly Lamech, seventy times seven fold.
4:25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bare a son,and she called his name Seth:for Elohim, said she, has appointed me another seed for Abel, because Cain slew him.
4:26And to the same Seth also there [was] born a son,and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of YHWH.

Chapter 5

5:1This [is] the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that Elohim created Adam, in the likeness of Elohim made he him,
5:2Male and female created he them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam in the day that they [were] created.
5:3Now Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat a child in his own likeness after his image, and called his name Seth.
5:4And the days of Adam, after he had begotten Seth, were eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters.
5:5So all the days that Adam lived, were nine hundred and thirty years:and he died.
5:6And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begat Enosh.
5:7And Seth lived, after he begat Enosh, eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:8So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years:and he died.
5:9Also Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Kenan.
5:10And Enosh lived, after he begat Kenan, eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:11So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years:and he died
5:12Likewise Kenan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel.
5:13And Kenan lived, after he begat Mahalaleel, eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:14So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years:and he died.
5:15Mahalaleel also lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared.
5:16Also Mahalaleel lived, after he begat Jared, eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:17So all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years:and he died.
5:18And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and begat Enoch.
5:19Then Jared lived, after he begat Enoch, eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:20So all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years:and he died.
5:21Also Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah.
5:22And Enoch walked with Elohim, after he begat Methuselah, three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:23So all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years.
5:24And Enoch walked with Elohim, and he [was] no more seen:for Elohim took him away.
5:25Methuselah also lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.
5:26And Methuselah lived, after he begat Lamech, seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:27So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years:and he died.
5:28Then Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son,
5:29And called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and sorrow of our hands, as touching the earth, which YHWH has cursed.
5:30And Lamech lived, after he begat Noah, five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters.
5:31So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years:and he died.
5:32And Noah was five hundred year old. And Noah begat Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Chapter 6

6:1So when men began to be multiplied upon the earth, and there were daughters born to them,
6:2Then the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair, and they took them wives of all that they liked.
6:3Therefore YHWH said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man, because he is but flesh, and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.
6:4There were giants in the earth in those days:yes, and after that the sons of Elohim came to the daughters of men,and they had born them children, these were mighty men, which in old time were men of renown.
6:5When YHWH saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and all the imaginations of the thoughts of his heart [were] only evil continually,
6:6Then it repented YHWH,that he had made man in the earth, and he [was] sorry in his heart.
6:7Therefore YHWH said, I will destroy from the earth the man, whom I have created, from man to beast, to the creeping thing, and to the fowl of the heaven:for I repent that I have made them.
6:8But Noah found grace in the eyes of YHWH.
6:9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just and upright man in his time:and Noah walked with Elohim.
6:10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth.
6:11The earth also [was] corrupt before Elohim:for the earth [was] filled with cruelty.
6:12Then Elohim looked upon the earth, and behold, it [was] corrupt:for all flesh had corrupt his way upon the earth.
6:13And Elohim said to Noah, An end of all flesh [is] come before me:for the earth [is] filled with cruelty through them:and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
6:14Make you an Ark of pine trees:you shall make cabins in the Ark,and shall pitch it within and without with pitch.
6:15And thus shall you make it:The length of the Ark shall [be] three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
6:16A window shall you make in the Ark,and in a cubit shall you finish it above, and the door of the Ark shall you set in the side thereof:you shall make it with the low, second and third room.
6:17And I, behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh, wherein [is] the breath of life under the heaven:all that [is] in the earth shall perish.
6:18But with you will I establish my covenant, and you shall go into the Ark, you,and your sons, and your wife, and your sons wives with you.
6:19And of every living thing, of all flesh two of every sort shall you cause to come into the Ark, to keep them alive with you:they shall be male and female.
6:20Of the fowls, after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come to you, that you may keep them alive.
6:21And take you with you of all meat that is eaten:and you shall gather it to you, that it may be meat for you and for them.
6:22Noah therefore did according to all, that Elohim commanded him:even so did he.

Chapter 7

7:1And YHWH said to Noah, Enter you and all your house into the Ark:for you have I seen righteous before me in this age.
7:2Of every clean beast you shall take to you by sevens, the male and his female:but of unclean beasts by couples, the male and his female.
7:3Of the fowls also of the heaven by sevens, male and female, to keep seed alive upon the whole earth.
7:4For seven days from now I will cause it rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights, and all the substance that I have made, will I destroy from off the earth.
7:5Noah therefore did according to all that YHWH commanded him.
7:6And Noah was six hundred years old, when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7:7So Noah entered and his sons, and his wife, and his sons wives with him into the Ark, because of the waters of the flood.
7:8Of the clean beasts, and of the unclean beasts, and of the fowls, and of all that creeps upon the earth,
7:9There came two and two to Noah into the Ark, male and female, as Elohim had commanded Noah.
7:10And so after seven days the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
7:11In the six hundred year of Noah's life in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, in the same day [were] all the fountains of the great deep broken up,and the windows of heaven [were] opened,
7:12And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
7:13In the self same day entered Noah with Shem, and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them into the Ark.
7:14They and every beast after his kind, and all cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps and moves upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, even every bird of every feather.
7:15For they came to Noah into the Ark, two and two, of all flesh wherein [is] the breath of life.
7:16And they entering in, came male and female of all flesh, as Elohim had commanded him:and YHWH shut him in.
7:17Then the flood was forty days upon the earth, and the waters were increased, and bare up the Ark, which was lift up above the earth.
7:18The waters also waxed strong, and [were] increased exceedingly upon the earth, and the Ark went upon the waters.
7:19The waters prevailed so exceedingly upon the earth, that all the high mountains, that [are] under the whole heaven, [were] covered.
7:20Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail, when the mountains [were] covered.
7:21Then all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, both fowl and cattle and beast, and every thing that creeps and moves upon the earth, and every man.
7:22Every thing in whose nostrils the spirit of life did breathe, whatever they [were] in the dry land, they died.
7:23So he destroyed every thing that [was] upon the earth, from man to beast, to the creeping thing, and to the fowl of the heaven:they [were] even destroyed from the earth. And Noah only remained;and they that [were] with him in the Ark.
7:24And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.

Chapter 8

8:1Now Elohim remembered Noah and every beast, and all the cattle that [was] with him in the Ark:therefore Elohim made a wind to pass upon the earth, and the waters ceased.
8:2The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven [were] stopped and the rain from heaven [was] restrained,
8:3And the waters returned from above the earth, going and returning:and after the end of the hundred and fiftieth day the waters abated.
8:4And in the seventh month, in the seventeenth day of the month, the Ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat.
8:5And the waters were going and decreasing until the tenth month:in the tenth month, and in the first day of the month were the tops of the mountains seen.
8:6So after forty days, Noah opened the window of the Ark, which he had made,
8:7And sent forth a raven, which went out going forth and returning, until the waters [were] dried up upon the earth.
8:8Again he sent a dove from him, that he might see if the waters [were] diminished from off the earth.
8:9But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot:therefore she returned to him into the Ark (for the waters [were] upon the whole earth) and he put forth his hand, and received her,and took her to him into the Ark.
8:10And he abode yet other seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the Ark.
8:11And the dove came to him in the evening, and lo, in her mouth [was] an olive leaf that she had plucked:whereby Noah knew that the waters [were] abated from off the earth.
8:12Notwithstanding he waited yet other seven days, and sent forth the dove, which returned not again to him any more.
8:13And in the six hundred and one year, in the first day of the first month the waters were dried up from off the earth:and Noah removed the covering of the Ark and looked, and behold, the upper part of the ground was dry.
8:14And in the second month, in the seven and twentieth day of the month [was] the earth dry.
8:15Then Elohim spoke to Noah, saying,
8:16Go forth of the Ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons wives with you.
8:17Bring forth with you every beast that [is] with you, of all flesh, both fowl and cattle, and every thing that creeps and moves upon the earth, that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and bring forth fruit and increase upon the earth.
8:18So Noah came forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons wives with him.
8:19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, all that moves upon the earth after their kinds went out of the Ark.
8:20Then Noah built an altar to YHWH and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings upon the altar.
8:21And YHWH smelled a savor of rest, and YHWH said in his heart, I will henceforth curse the ground no more for man's cause:for the imagination of man's heart [is] evil, even from his youth:neither will I smite any more all things living, as I have done.
8:22Hereafter seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease, so long as the earth remains.

Chapter 9

9:1And Elohim blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Bring forth fruit, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
9:2Also the fear of you,and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the heaven, upon all that moves on the earth, and upon all the fish of the sea:into your hand are they delivered.
9:3Every thing that moves and lives, shall be meat for you:as the green herb, have I given you all things.
9:4But flesh with the life thereof, I mean, with the blood thereof, shall you not eat.
9:5For surely I will require your blood, wherein your lives [are]:at the hand of every beast will I require it:and at the hand of man, even at the hand of a man's brother will I require the life of man.
9:6Who so sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood [be] shed:for in the image of Elohim has he made man.
9:7But bring you forth fruit and multiply:grow plentifully in the earth, and increase therein.
9:8Elohim spoke also to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,
9:9Behold, I, even I establish my covenant with you,and with your seed after you,
9:10And with every living creature that [is] with you, with the fowl, with the cattle, and with every beast of the earth with you, from all that go out of the Ark, to every beast of the earth.
9:11And my covenant will I establish with you, that from henceforth all flesh shall not be rooted out by the waters of the flood, neither shall there be a flood to destroy the earth any more.
9:12Then Elohim said, This [is] the token of the covenant which I make between me and you,and between every living thing, that [is] with you to perpetual generations.
9:13I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
9:14And when I shall cover the earth with a cloud, and the bow shall be seen in the cloud,
9:15Then will I remember my covenant, which is between me and you,and between every living thing in all flesh, and there shall be no more waters of a flood to destroy all flesh.
9:16Therefore the bow shall be in the cloud, that I may see it,and remember the everlasting covenant between Elohim, and every living thing in all flesh that is upon the earth.
9:17Elohim said yet to Noah, This [is] the sign of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that [is] upon the earth.
9:18Now the sons of Noah going forth of the Ark, were Shem and Ham and Japheth. And Ham is the father of Canaan.
9:19These [are] the three sons of Noah, and of them [was] the whole earth overspread.
9:20Noah also began to [be] a husband man and planted a vineyard.
9:21And he drunk of the wine and [was] drunken, and [was] uncovered in the midst of his tent.
9:22And when Ham the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father, he told his two brethren without.
9:23Then took Shem and Japheth a garment, and put it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father with their faces backward:so they saw not their fathers nakedness.
9:24Then Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him,
9:25And said, Cursed be Canaan:a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren.
9:26He said moreover, blessed be YHWH Elohim of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.
9:27Elohim persuade Japheth, that he may dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.
9:28And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
9:29So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years:and he died.

Chapter 10

10:1Now these [are] the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth:to whom sons [were] born after the flood.
10:2The sons of Japheth [were] Gomer and Magog,and Madai,and Javan,and Tubal,and Meshech,and Tiras.
10:3And the sons of Gomer, Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
10:4Also the sons of Javan, Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
10:5Of these [were] the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands, every man after his tongue, and after their families in their nations.
10:6Moreover, the sons of Ham [were] Cush, and Mizraim, and Put,and Canaan.
10:7And the sons of Cush, Seba and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah:also the sons of Raamah [were] Sheba and Dedan.
10:8And Cush begat Nimrod, who began to be mighty in the earth.
10:9He was a mighty hunter before YHWH. Wherefore it is said, As Nimrod the mighty hunter before YHWH.
10:10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
10:11Out of that land came Asshur, and built Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah:
10:12Resen also between Nineveh and Calah:this [is] a great city.
10:13And Mizraim begat Ludim,and Anamim,and Lehabim,and Naphtuhim.
10:14Pathrusim also, and Casluhim (out of whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.
10:15Also Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth,
10:16And Jebusite,and Amorite,and Girgashite,
10:17And Hivite,and Arkite,and Sinite,
10:18And Arvadite, and Zemarite, and Hamathite:and afterward [were] the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.
10:19Then the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as you come to Gerar until Admah, and as you go to Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboiim, even to Lasha.
10:20These [are] the sons of Ham according to their families, according to their tongues in their countries and in their nations.
10:21To Shem also the father of all the sons of Eber, and elder brother of Japheth [were] children born.
10:22The sons of Shem [were] Elam and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud,and Aram.
10:23And the sons of Aram, Uz and Hul,and Gether and Mash.
10:24Also Arphaxad begat Salah, and Salah begat Eber.
10:25To Eber also [were] born two sons:the name of the one [was] Peleg:for in his days [was] the earth divided:and his brothers name [was] Joktan.
10:26Then Joktan begat Almodad and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,
10:27And Hadoram,and Uzal,and Diklah,
10:28And Obal,and Abimael,and Sheba,
10:29And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab:all these [were] the sons of Joktan.
10:30And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go to Sephar a mount of the East.
10:31These [are] the sons of Shem according to their families, according to their tongues, in their countries and nations.
10:32These [are] the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations among their people:and out of these [were] the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

Chapter 11

11:1Then the whole earth was of one language and one speech.
11:2And as they went from the East, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and there they abode.
11:3And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn it in the fire. So they had brick for stone, and slime had they in stead of mortar.
11:4Also they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach to the heaven, that we may get us a name, lest we [be] scattered upon the whole earth.
11:5But YHWH came down, to see the city and tower, which the sons of men built.
11:6And YHWH said, Behold, the people [is] one,and they all have one language, and this they begin to do,neither can they now [be] stopped from whatever they have imagined to do.
11:7Come on, let us go down, and there confound their language, that every one perceive not another's speech.
11:8So YHWH scattered them from there upon all the earth, and they left off to build the city.
11:9Therefore the name of it [was] called Babel, because YHWH did there confound the language of all the earth:from there then did YHWH scatter them upon all the earth.
11:10These [are] the generations of Shem:Shem [was] a hundred year old,and begat Arphaxad two year after the flood.
11:11And Shem lived, after he begat Arphaxad, five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:12Also Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah.
11:13And Arphaxad lived, after he begat Salah, four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:14And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber.
11:15So Salah lived, after he begat Eber, four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:16Likewise Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg.
11:17So Eber lived, after he begat Peleg, four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters
11:18And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu.
11:19And Peleg lived, after he begat Reu, two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:20Also Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug.
11:21So Reu lived, after he begat Serug, two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:22Moreover Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor.
11:23And Serug lived, after he begat Nahor, two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:24And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah.
11:25So Nahor lived, after he begat Terah, a hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
11:26So Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
11:27Now these [are] the generations of Terah:Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran:and Haran begat Lot.
11:28Then Haran died before Terah his father in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
11:29So Abram and Nahor took them wives. The name of Abrams wife [was] Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
11:30But Sarai was barren, and had no child.
11:31Then Terah took Abram his son,and Lot the son of Haran, his sons son,and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abrams wife:and they departed together from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan, and they came to Haran, and dwelt there.
11:32So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

Chapter 12

12:1For YHWH had said to Abram, Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your fathers house to the land that I will show you.
12:2And I will make of you a great nation, and will bless you,and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing.
12:3I will also bless them that bless you,and curse them that curse you,and in you shall all families of the earth [be] blessed.
12:4So Abram departed, even as YHWH spoke to him,and Lot went with him. (And Abram [was] seventy and five year old, when he departed out of Haran)
12:5Then Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brothers son,and all their substance that they possessed, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran, and they departed, to go to the land of Canaan:and to the land of Canaan they came.
12:6So Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, and to the plain of Moreh (and the Canaanite [was] then in the land)
12:7And YHWH appeared to Abram, and said, To your seed will I give this land. And there built he an altar to YHWH, which appeared to him.
12:8Afterward removing from there to a mountain Eastward from Bethel, he pitched his tent having Bethel on the West, and Haai on the East:and there he built an altar to YHWH,and called on the Name of YHWH.
12:9Again Abram went forth going and journeying toward the South.
12:10Then there came a famine in the land:therefore Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there:for there was a great famine in the land.
12:11And when he drew near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that you are a fair woman to look upon:
12:12Therefore it will come to pass, that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, She is his wife:so will they kill me,but they will keep you alive.
12:13Say, I pray you, that you [are] my sister, that I may fare well for your sake, and that my life may [be] preserved by you.
12:14Now when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman:for she was very fair.
12:15And the Princes of Pharaoh saw her,and commended her to Pharaoh:so the woman [was] taken into Pharaohs house:
12:16Who treated Abram well for her sake, and he had sheep, and beeves, and he asses, and men servants and maid servants, and she asses, and camels.
12:17But YHWH plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues, because of Sarai Abrams wife.
12:18Then Pharaoh called Abram, and said, Why have you done this to me? Wherefore did you not tell me,that she [was] your wife?
12:19Why said you, She [is] my sister, that I should take her to [be] my wife? Now therefore behold your wife, take her and go your way.
12:20And Pharaoh gave men commandment concerning him:and they conveyed him forth, and his wife, and all that he had.

Chapter 13

13:1Then Abram went up from Egypt, he,and his wife, and all that he had,and Lot with him toward the South.
13:2And Abram [was] very rich in cattle, in silver and in gold.
13:3And he went on his journey from the South toward Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Haai,
13:4To the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first:and there Abram called on the Name of YHWH.
13:5And Lot also, who went with Abram, had sheep, and cattle and tents,
13:6So that the land could not bear them, that they might dwell together:for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
13:7Also there was debate between the herdsmen of Abrams cattle, and the herdsmen of Lots cattle. (and the Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelled at that time in the land.)
13:8Then said Abram to Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray you, between you and me,neither between my herdsmen and your herdsmen:for we be brethren.
13:9[Is] not the whole land before you? Depart I pray you from me:if you will take the left hand, then I will go to the right:or if you go to the right hand, then I will take the left.
13:10So when Lot lifted up his eyes, he saw that all the plain of Jordan [was] watered every where:(for before YHWH destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, it [was] as the garden of YHWH, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar)
13:11Then Lot chose to him all the plain of Jordan, and took his journey from the East:and they departed the one from the other.
13:12Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot abode in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent even to Sodom.
13:13Now the men of Sodom [were] wicked and exceeding sinners against YHWH.
13:14Then YHWH said to Abram, (after that Lot [was] departed from him) Lift up your eyes now,and look from the place where you [are], Northward, and Southward, and Eastward, and Westward:
13:15For all the land, which you see, will I give to you and to your seed forever,
13:16And I will make your seed, as the dust of the earth:so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall your seed [be] numbered.
13:17Arise, walk through the land, in the length thereof, and breadth thereof:for I will give it to you.
13:18Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelled in the plain of Mamre, which [is] in Hebron, and built there an altar to YHWH.

Chapter 14

14:1And in the days of Amraphel King of Shinar, Arioch King of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer King of Elam, and Tidal king of the nations:
14:2These men made war with Bera King of Sodom, and with Birsha King of Gomorrah, Shinab King of Admah, and Shemeber King of Zeboiim, and the King of Bela, which [is] Zoar.
14:3All these joined together in the vale of Siddim, which [is] the salt Sea.
14:4Twelve year [were] they subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
14:5And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the Kings that [were] with him,and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham,and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
14:6And the Horites in their mount Seir, to the plain of Paran, which [is] by the wilderness.
14:7And they returned and came to Mishpat, which [is] Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites that dwelled in Hazezon.
14:8Then went out the King of Sodom, and the King of Gomorrah, and the King of Admah, and the King of Zeboiim, and the King of Bela, which [is] Zoar:and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim:
14:9To wit, with Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar--four:four Kings against five.
14:10Now the vale of Siddim [was] full of slime pits, and the Kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell there:and the residue fled to the mountain.
14:11Then they took all the substance of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals and went their way.
14:12They took Lot also Abrams brothers son and his substance (for he dwelt at Sodom) and departed.
14:13Then came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew, which dwelt in the plain of Mamre you Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner, which [were] confederate with Abram.
14:14When Abram heard that his brother [was] taken, he brought forth of them that [were] born and brought up in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them to Dan.
14:15Then he,and his servants divided themselves against them by night, and smote them and pursued them to Hobah, which [is] on the left side of Damascus,
14:16And he recovered all the substance, and also brought again his brother Lot,and his goods, and the women also and the people.
14:17After that he returned from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the Kings that [were] with him, came the King of Sodom forth to meet him in the valley of Shaveh, which [is] the Kings dale.
14:18And Melchizedek King of Salem brought forth bread and wine:and he [was] a Priest of the most high God.
14:19Therefore he blessed him, saying, Blessed [are] you, Abram, of God most high possessor of heaven and earth,
14:20And blessed [be] the most high God, which has delivered your enemies into your hand. And Abram gave him tithe of all.
14:21Then the King of Sodom said to Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to yourself.
14:22And Abram said to the King of Sodom, I have lift up my hand to YHWH the most high God possessor of heaven and earth,
14:23That I will not take of all that [is] yours, so much as a thread or shoelatchet, lest you should say, I have made Abram rich,
14:24Save only that, which the young men have eaten, and the parts of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre:let them take their parts.

Chapter 15

15:1After these things, the word of YHWH came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram, I am your buckler, and your exceeding great reward.
15:2And Abram said, O Adonai God, what will you give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house [is] this Eliezer of Damascus?
15:3Again Abram said, Behold, to me you have given no seed:wherefore lo, a servant of my house shall [be] my heir.
15:4Then behold, the word of YHWH came to him, saying, This man shall not [be] your heir, but one that shall come out of your own bowels, he shall [be] your heir.
15:5Moreover he brought him forth and said, Look up now to heaven, and tell the stars, if you be able to number them:and he said to him, So shall your seed be.
15:6And Abram believed YHWH,and he counted that to him for righteousness.
15:7Again he said to him, I [am] YHWH,that brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.
15:8And he said, O Adonai God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
15:9Then he said to him, Take me a heifer of three years old,and a she goat of three years old,and a ram of three years old, a turtle dove also and a pigeon.
15:10So he took all these to him,and divided them into the midst, and laid every piece one against an other:but the birds divided he not.
15:11Then fowls fell on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
15:12And when the sun went down, there fell a heavy sleep upon Abram:and lo, a very fearful darkness fell upon him.
15:13Then he said to Abram, Know for a surety, that your seed shall be a stranger in a land, that is not theirs, four hundred years, and shall serve them:and they shall entreat them evil.
15:14Notwithstanding the nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge:and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15:15But you shall go to your fathers in peace, and shall [be] buried in a good age.
15:16And in the fourth generation they shall come here again:for the wickedness of the Amorites [is] not yet full.
15:17Also when the sun went down, there was a darkness:and behold, a smoking furnace, and a firebrand, which went between those pieces.
15:18In that same day YHWH made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.
15:19The Kenites,and the Kenites,and the Kadmonites,
15:20And the Hittites,and the Perizzites,and the Rephaim,
15:21The Amorites also,and the Canaanites,and the Girgashites,and the Jebusites.

Chapter 16

16:1Now Sarai Abrams wife bare him no children, and she had a maid an Egyptian, Hagar by name.
16:2And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, YHWH has restrained me from childbearing. I pray you go in to my maid:it may [be] that I shall receive a child by her. And Abram obeyed the voice of Sarai.
16:3Then Sarai Abrams wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelled ten year in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram for his wife.
16:4And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her dame [was] despised in her eyes.
16:5Then Sarai said to Abram, You do me wrong. I have given my maid into your bosom, and she sees that she has conceived, and I [am] despised in her eyes:YHWH judge between me and you.
16:6Then Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your maid [is] in your hand:do with her as it pleases you. Then Sarai dealt roughly with her:wherefore she fled from her.
16:7But the Angel of YHWH found her beside a fountain of water in the wilderness by the fountain in the way to Shur,
16:8And he said, Hagar Sarai's maid, whence come you? And where will you go? And she said, I fly from my dame Sarai.
16:9Then the Angel of YHWH said to her, Return to your dame, and humble yourself under her hands.
16:10Again the Angel of YHWH said to her, I will so greatly increase your seed, that it shall not [be] numbred for multitude.
16:11Also the Angel of YHWH said to her, See, you [are] with child, and shall bear a son,and shall call his name Ishmael:for YHWH has heard your tribulation.
16:12And he shall be a wild man:his hand shall be against every man,and every man's hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
16:13Then she called the name of YHWH,that spoke to her, You God look on me:for she said, Have I not also here looked after him that sees me?
16:14Wherefore the well [was] called, Beerlahai-roi. Lo, it [is] between Kadesh and Bered.
16:15And Hagar bare Abram a son,and Abram called his sons name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16:16And Abram [was] four score and six year old, when Hagar bare him Ishmael.

Chapter 17

17:1When Abram was ninety year old and nine, YHWH appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am God all sufficient. Walk before me,and be you upright,
17:2And I will make my covenant between me and you,and I will multiply you exceedingly.
17:3Then Abram fell on his face, and Elohim talked with him, saying,
17:4Behold, I make my covenant with you,and you shall be a father of many nations,
17:5Neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham:for a father of many nations have I made you.
17:6Also I will make you exceeding fruitful, and will make nations of you:yes, Kings shall proceed of you.
17:7Moreover I will establish my covenant between me and you,and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be Elohim to you and to your seed after you.
17:8And I will give you and your seed after you the land, wherein you are a stranger, even all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their Elohim.
17:9Again Elohim said to Abraham, You also shall keep my covenant, you,and your seed after you in their generations.
17:10This [is] my covenant which you shall keep between me and you,and your seed after you, Let every man child among you [be] circumcised:
17:11That is, you shall circumcise the foreskin of your flesh, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
17:12And every man child of eight days old among you, shall [be] circumcised in your generations, aswell he that [is] born in your house, as he that [is] bought with money of any stranger, which [is] not of your seed.
17:13He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with your money, must needs be circumcised:so my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
17:14But the uncircumcised man child, in whose flesh the foreskin [is] not circumcised, even that person shall [be] cut off from his people, because he has broken my covenant.
17:15Afterward Elohim said to Abraham, Sarai your wife shall you not call Sarai, but Sarah shall [be] her name.
17:16And I will bless her,and will also give you a son of her, yes, I will bless her,and she shall be the mother of nations:Kings also of people shall come of her.
17:17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child [be] born to him, that [is] a hundred year old? And shall Sarah that [is] ninety year old bear?
17:18And Abraham said to Elohim, Oh,that Ishmael might live in your sight.
17:19Then Elohim said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son in deed, and you shall call his name Isaac:and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
17:20And as concerning Ishmael, I have heard you:lo, I have blessed him,and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly:twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make a great nation of him.
17:21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear to you, the next year at this season.
17:22And he left off talking with him,and Elohim went up from Abraham.
17:23Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all that [were] born in his house, and all that [was] bought with his money, that [is], every man child among the men of Abrahams house, and he circumcised the foreskin of their flesh in that self same day, as Elohim had comaunded him.
17:24Abraham also himself [was] ninety year old and nine, when the foreskin of his flesh [was] circumcised.
17:25And Ishmael his son [was] thirteen year old, when the foreskin of his flesh [was] circumcised.
17:26The self same day [was] Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son:
17:27And all the men of his house, both born in his house, and bought with money of the stranger, [were] circumcised with him.

Chapter 18

18:1Again YHWH appeared to him in the plain of Are, as he sat in his tent door about the heat of the day.
18:2And he lift up his eyes, and looked:and lo, three men stood by him,and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the ground.
18:3And he said, Lord, if I have now found favor in your sight, go not, I pray you, from your servant.
18:4Let a little water, I pray you, [be] brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
18:5And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may comfort your hearts, afterward you shall go your ways:for therefore [are] you come to your servant. And they said, Do even as you have said.
18:6Then Abraham made haste into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready at once three measures of fine meal:knead it,and make cakes upon the hearth.
18:7And Abraham ran to the beasts, and took a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant, who hasted to make it ready.
18:8And he took butter and milk, and the calf, which he had prepared, and set before them, and stood himself by them under the tree, and they did eat.
18:9Then they said to him, Where [is] Sarah your wife? And he answered, Behold, she [is] in the tent.
18:10And he said, I will certainly come again to you according to the time of life:and lo, Sarah your wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard in the tent door, which [was] behind him.
18:11(Now Abraham and Sarah were old and stricken in age,and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women)
18:12Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old,and my lord also, shall I have lust?
18:13And YHWH said to Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah thus laugh, saying, Shall I certainly bear a child, which [am] old?
18:14(Shall any thing [be] hard to YHWH? At the time appointed will I return to you, even according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.)
18:15But Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not:for she [was] afraid. And he said, It [is] not so:for you laughed.
18:16Afterward the men did rise up from there and looked toward Sodom:and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
18:17And YHWH said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do,
18:18Seeing that Abraham shall be in deed a great and a mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
18:19For I know him that he will command his sons and his household after him, that they keep the way of YHWH, to do righteousness and judgment, that YHWH may bring upon Abraham that he has spoken to him.
18:20Then YHWH said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah [is] great, and because their sin [is] exceeding grievous,
18:21I will go down now,and see whether they have done altogether according to that cry which [is] come to me:and if not, that I may know.
18:22And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom:but Abraham stood yet before YHWH.
18:23Then Abraham drew near, and said, Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
18:24If there [be] fifty righteous within the city, will you destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that [are] therein?
18:25Be it far from you from doing this thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked:and that the righteous should be even as the wicked, be it far from you. Shall not the Judge of all the world do right?
18:26And YHWH answered, If I shall find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then will I spare all the place for their sakes.
18:27Then Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have begun to speak to my Adonai, and I [am] but dust and ashes.
18:28If there shall lack five of fifty righteous, will you destroy all the city for five? And he said, If I find there five and forty, I will not destroy it.
18:29And he yet spoke to him again, and said, What if there shall [be] found forty there? Then he answered, I will not do it for fourties sake.
18:30Again he said, Let not my Adonai now [be] angry, that I speak, What if thirty [be] found there? Then he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
18:31Moreover he said, Behold, now I have begun to speak to my Adonai, What if twenty [be] found there? And he answered, I will not destroy it for twenties sake.
18:32Then he said, Let not my Adonai [be] now angry, and I will speak but this once, What if ten [be] found there? And he answered, I will not destroy it for tens sake.
18:33And YHWH went his way when he had left communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Chapter 19

19:1And in the evening there came two Angels to Sodom:and Lot sat at the gate of Sodom, and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face to the ground.
19:2And he said, See my Lords, I pray you turn in now into your servants house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early and go your ways. Who said, No,but we will abide in the street all night.
19:3Then he preassed upon them earnestly, and they turned in to him,and came to his house, and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
19:4But before they went to bed, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom compassed the house round about from the young even to the old, all the people from all quarters.
19:5Who crying to Lot said to him, Where [are] the men, which came to you this night? Bring them out to us that we may know them.
19:6Then Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door after him,
19:7And said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly.
19:8Behold now, I have two daughters, which have not known man:them will I bring out now to you,and do to them as seems you good:only to these men do nothing:for therefore [are] they come under the shadow of my roof.
19:9Then they said, Away from here, and they said, He [is] come alone as a stranger, and shall he judge and rule? We will now deal worse with you than with them. So they preassed sore upon Lot himself, and came to break the door.
19:10But the men put forth their hand and pulled Lot into the house to them and shut to the door.
19:11Then they smote the men that [were] at the door of the house with blindness both small and great, so that they [were] weary in seeking the door.
19:12Then the men said to Lot, Whom have you yet here? Either son in law, or your sons, or your daughters, or whatever you have in the city, bring it out of this place.
19:13For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them [is] great before YHWH,and YHWH has sent us to destroy it.
19:14Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Arise, get you out of this place:for YHWH will destroy the city:but he seemed to his sons in law as though he had mocked.
19:15And when the morning arose, the Angels hasted Lot, saying, Arise, take your wife and your two daughters which [are] here, lest you [be] destroyed in the punishment of the city.
19:16And as he prolonged the time, the men caught both him and his wife, and his two daughters by the hands (YHWH [being] merciful to him) and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
19:17And when they had brought them out, the Angel said, Escape for your life:look not behind you, neither tarry you in all the plain:escape into the mountain, lest you be destroyed.
19:18And Lot said to them, Not so, I pray you, my Adonai.
19:19Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have showed to me in saving my life:and I cannot escape in the mountain, lest some evil take me,and I die.
19:20See now this city hereby to flee to, which [is] a little one:Oh let me escape there:[is] it not a little one,and my soul shall live?
19:21Then he said to him, Behold, I have received your request also concerning this thing, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which you have spoken.
19:22Haste you, save you there:for I can do nothing till you [be] come there. Therefore the name of the city [was] called Zoar.
19:23The sun did rise upon the earth, when Lot entered into Zoar.
19:24Then YHWH rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone, and fire from YHWH out of heaven,
19:25And overthrew those cities and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities;and that that grew upon the earth.
19:26Now his wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
19:27And Abraham rising up early in the morning went to the place, where he had stand before YHWH,
19:28And looking toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the plain, behold, he saw the smoke of the land mounting up as the smoke of a furnace.
19:29But yet when Elohim destroyed the cities of the plain, Elohim thought upon Abraham, and sent Lot out from the midst of the destruction, when he overthrew the cities, wherein Lot dwelled.
19:30Then Lot went up from Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain with his two daughters:for he feared to tarry in Zoar, but dwelt in a cave, he,and his two daughters.
19:31And the elder said to the younger, Our father [is] old,and there [is] not a man in the earth, to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.
19:32Come, we will make our father drink wine, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
19:33So they made their father drink wine that night, and the elder went and lay with her father:but he perceived not, neither when she lay down, neither when she rose up.
19:34And on the morrow the elder said to the younger, Behold, yesternight lay I with my father:let us make him drink wine this night also, and go you and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
19:35So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose, and lay with him,but he perceived not, when she lay down, neither when she rose up.
19:36Thus [were] both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
19:37And the elder bare a son,and she called his name Moab:the same [is] the father of the Moabites to this day.
19:38And the younger bare a son also, and she called his name Ben-ammi:the same [is] the father of the Ammonites to this day.

Chapter 20

20:1Afterward Abraham departed from there toward the South country and dwelled between Made and Her,and sojourned in Gerar.
20:2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She [is] my sister. Then Abimelech King of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
20:3But Elohim came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, you [are] but dead, because of the woman, which you have taken:for she [is] a man's wife.
20:4(Notwithstanding Abimelech had not yet come near her) And he said, Adonai, will you slay even the righteous nation?
20:5Said not he to me, She [is] my sister? Yes,and she herself said, He [is] my brother:with an upright mind, and innocent hands have I done this.
20:6And Elohim said to him by a dream, I know that you did this even with an upright mind, and I kept you also that you should not sin against me:therefore suffered I you not to touch her.
20:7Now then deliver the man his wife again:for he [is] a Prophet, and he shall pray for you that you may live:but if you deliver her not again, [be] sure that you shall die the death, you,and all that you have.
20:8Then Abimelech rising up early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things to them, and the men [were] sore afraid.
20:9Afterward Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What have you done to us? And what have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom this great sin? You have done things to me that ought not to [be] done.
20:10So Abimelech said to Abraham, What saw you that you have done this thing?
20:11Then Abraham answered, Because I thought thus, Surely the fear of Elohim [is] not in this place, and they will slay me for my wives sake.
20:12Yet in very deed she is my sister:for she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she is my wife.
20:13Now when Elohim caused me to wander out of my fathers house, I said then to her, This is your kindness that you shall show to me in all places where we come, Say you of me, He is my brother.
20:14Then took Abimelech sheep and beeves, and men servants, and women servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
20:15And Abimelech said, Behold, my land [is] before you:dwell where it pleases you.
20:16Likewise to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver:behold, he [is] the veil of your eyes to all that [are] with you,and to all others:and she [was] thus reproved.
20:17Then Abraham prayed to Elohim, and Elohim healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his women servants:and they bare children.
20:18For YHWH had shut up every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.

Chapter 21

21:1Now YHWH visited Sarah, as he had said, and did to her according as he had promised.
21:2For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the same season that Elohim told him.
21:3And Abraham called his sons name that [was] born to him, which Sarah bare him, Isaac.
21:4Then Abraham circumcised Isaac his son, when he [was] eight days old, as Elohim had commanded him.
21:5So Abraham [was] a hundred year old, when his son Isaac [was] born to him.
21:6Then Sarah said, Elohim has made me to rejoice:all that hear will rejoice with me.
21:7Again she said, Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? For I have born him a son in his old age.
21:8Then the child grew and [was] weaned:and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac [was] weaned.
21:9And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian (which she had born to Abraham) mocking.
21:10Wherefore she said to Abraham, Cast out this bond woman and her son:for the son of this bond woman shall not [be] heir with my son Isaac.
21:11And this thing [was] very grievous in Abrahams sight, because of his son.
21:12But Elohim said to Abraham, Let it not [be] grievous in your sight for the child, and for your bond woman:in all that Sarah shall say to you, hear her voice:for in Isaac shall your seed [be] called.
21:13As for the son of the bond woman, I will make him a nation also, because he [is] your seed.
21:14So Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child also, and sent her away:who departing wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
21:15And when the water of the bottle [was] spent, she cast the child under a certain tree.
21:16Then she went and sat her over against him a far off about a bow shoot:for she said, I will not see the death of the child. And she sat down over against him,and lift up her voice and wept.
21:17Then Elohim heard the voice of the child, and the Angel of Elohim called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, What ails you, Hagar? Fear not,for Elohim has heard the voice of the child where he [is].
21:18Arise, take up the child, and hold him in your hand:for I will make of him a great people.
21:19And Elohim opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy drink.
21:20So Elohim was with the child, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and was an archer.
21:21And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
21:22And at that same time Abimelech and Phichol his chief captain spoke to Abraham, saying, Elohim is with you in all that you do.
21:23Now therefore swear to me here by Elohim, that you will not hurt me, nor my children, nor my childrens children:you shall deal with me,and with the country, where you have [been] a stranger, according to the kindness that I have showed you.
21:24Then Abraham said, I will swear.
21:25And Abraham rebuked Abimelech for a well of water, which Abimelechs servants had violently taken away.
21:26And Abimelech said, I know not who has done this thing:also you told me not, neither heard I of it but this day.
21:27Then Abraham took sheep and beeves, and gave them to Abimelech:and they two made a covenant.
21:28And Abraham set seven lambs of the flock by themselves.
21:29Then Abimelech said to Abraham, What mean these seven lambs, which you have set by themselves?
21:30And he answered, Because you shall receive of my hand these seven lambs, that it may be a witness to me,that I have digged this well.
21:31Wherefore the place [is] called Beer-sheba, because there they both swore.
21:32Thus made they a covenant at Beer-sheba:afterward Abimelech and Phichol his chief captain rose up,and turned again to the land of the Philistines.
21:33And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba,and called there on the Name of YHWH, the everlasting God.
21:34And Abraham [was] a stranger in the Philistines land a long season.

Chapter 22

22:1And after these things Elohim did prove Abraham, and said to him, Abraham. Who answered, Here am I.
22:2And he said, Take now your only son Isaac whom you love, and get you to the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains, which I will show you.
22:3Then Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass,and took two of his servants with him,and Isaac his son,and clove wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went to the place, which Elohim had told him.
22:4Then the third day Abraham lift up his eyes, and saw the place afar off,
22:5And said to his servants, Abide you here with the ass:for I and the child will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
22:6Then Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son,and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife:and they went both together.
22:7Then spoke Isaac to Abraham his father, and said, My father. And he answered, Here [am] I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood, but where [is] the lamb for the burnt offering?
22:8Then Abraham answered, My son, Elohim will provide him a lamb for a burnt offering:so they went both together.
22:9And when they came to the place which Elohim had showed him, Abraham built an altar there, and couched the wood, and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
22:10And Abraham stretching forth his hand, took the knife to kill his son.
22:11But the Angel of YHWH called to him from heaven, saying, Abraham, Abraham. And he answered, Here [am] I.
22:12Then he said, Lay not your hand upon the child, neither do any thing to him:for now I know that you fear Elohim, seeing for my sake you have not spared your only son.
22:13And Abraham lifting up his eyes, looked:and behold, there [was] a ram behind him caught by the horns in a bush. Then Abraham went and took the ram,and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
22:14And Abraham called the name of that place, Iehouah-ijreh. As it [is] said this day, In the mount will YHWH [be] seen.
22:15And the Angel of YHWH cried to Abraham from heaven the second time,
22:16And said, By myself have I sworn (saysYHWH) because you have done this thing, and have not spared your only son,
22:17Therefore will I surely bless you,and will greatly multiply your seed, as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore, and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.
22:18And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth [be] blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.
22:19Then turned Abraham again to his servants, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba:and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.
22:20And after these things one told Abraham, saying, Behold Milcah, she has also born children to your brother Nahor:
22:21To wit, Vz his eldest son,and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
22:22And Chesed and Hazo,and Pildash,and Iidlaph,and Bethuel.
22:23And Bethuel begat Rebekah:these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor Abrahams brother.
22:24And his concubine called Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gahan, and Thahash and Maachah.

Chapter 23

23:1When Sarah was a hundred twenty and seven year old (so long lived she).
23:2Then Sarah died in Kiriath-arba:the same [is] Hebron in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
23:3Then Abraham rose up from the sight of his corps, and talked with the Hittites, saying,
23:4I [am] a stranger, and a forreiner among you, give me a possession of burial with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
23:5Then the Hittites answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:6Hear us, my lord:you [are] a prince of Elohim among us:in the chief of our sepulchres bury your dead:none of us shall forbid you his sepulchre, but you may bury your dead therein.
23:7Then Abraham stood up,and bowed himself before the people of the land of the Hittites.
23:8And he communed with them, saying, If it [be] your mind, that I shall bury my dead out of my sight, hear me,and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
23:9That he would give me the cave of Machpelah, which he has in the end of his field:that he would give it me for as much money as it [is] worth, for a possession to bury in among you.
23:10(For Ephron dwelt among the Hittites) Then Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of all the Hittites that went in at the gates of his city, saying,
23:11No, my Lord, hear me:the field give I you,and the cave, that therein [is], I give it you:even in the presence of the sons of my people give I it you, to bury your dead.
23:12Then Abraham bowed himself before the people of the land,
23:13And spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the country, saying, Seeing you will give it, I pray you, hear me, I will give the price of the field:receive it of me,and I will bury my dead there.
23:14Ephron then answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:15My lord, hearken to me:the land [is] worth four hundred shekels of silver:what [is] that between me and you? Bury therefore your dead.
23:16So Abraham hearkened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named, in the audience of the Hittites, even four hundred silver shekels of currant money among merchants.
23:17So the field of Ephron which [was] in Machpelah, and over against Mamre, even the field and the cave that [was] therein, and all the trees that [were] in the field, which [were] in all the borders round about, [was] made sure
23:18To Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the Hittites, even of all that went in at the gates of his city.
23:19And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah over against Mamre:the same [is] Hebron in the land of Canaan.
23:20Thus the field and the cave, that [is] therein, [was] made sure to Abraham for a possession of burial by the Hittites.

Chapter 24

24:1Now Abraham [was] old,and stricken in years, and YHWH had blessed Abraham in all things.
24:2Therefore Abraham said to his eldest servant of his house, which had the rule over all that he had, Put now your hand under my thigh,
24:3And I will make you swear by YHWH Elohim of the heaven, and Elohim of the earth, that you shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among who I dwell.
24:4But you shall go to my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife to my son Isaac.
24:5And the servant said to him, What if the woman will not come with me to this land? Shall I bring your son again to the land from whence you came?
24:6To whom Abraham answered, Beware that you bring not my son there again.
24:7YHWH Elohim of heaven, who took me from my fathers house, and from the land where I [was] born, and that spoke to me,and that swore to me, saying, To your seed will I give this land, he shall send his Angel before you,and you shall take a wife to my son from there.
24:8Nevertheless if the woman will not follow you, then shall you [be] discharged of this my oath:only bring not my son there again.
24:9Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him for this matter.
24:10So the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed:(for he had all his masters goods in his hand:) and so he arose, and went to Aram Naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
24:11And he made his camels to lie down without the city by a well of water, at eventide about the time that the women come out to draw water.
24:12And he said, O YHWH Elohim of my master Abraham, I beseech You, send me good speed this day,and show mercy to my master Abraham.
24:13Lo, I stand by the well of water, while the mens daughters of this city come out to draw water.
24:14Graunt therefore that the maid, to whom I say, Bow down your pitcher, I pray you, that I may drink:if she say, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also:may be she that you have ordained for your servant Isaac:and thereby shall I know that you have showed mercy on my master.
24:15And now yer he had left speaking, behold, Rebekah came out, the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah the wife of Nahor Abrahams brother, and her pitcher upon her shoulder.
24:16(And the maid [was] very fair to look upon, a virgin and unknown of man) and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
24:17Then the servant ran to meet her,and said, Let me drink, I pray you, a little water of your pitcher.
24:18And she said, Drink sir:and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink.
24:19And when she had given him drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also until they have drunken inough.
24:20And she poured out her pitcher into the trough speedily;and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels.
24:21So the man wondred at her,and held his peace, to know whether YHWH had made his journey prosperous or not.
24:22And when the camels had left drinking, the man took a golden abillement of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands, of ten shekels weight of gold:
24:23And he said, Whose daughter [are] you? Tell me, I pray you, [Is] there room in your fathers house for us to lodge in?
24:24Then she said to him, I [am] the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah whom she bare to Nahor.
24:25Moreover she said to him, We have litter also and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
24:26And the man bowed himself and worshipped YHWH,
24:27And said, Blessed [be] YHWH Elohim of my master Abraham, which has not withdrawn his mercy and his truth from my master:for when I [was] in the way, YHWH brought me to my masters brethrens house.
24:28And the maid ran and told them of her mothers house according to these words.
24:29Now Rebekah had a brother called Laban, and Laban ran to the man to the well.
24:30For when he had seen the earings and the bracelets in his sisters hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus said the man to me, then he went to the man,and lo, he stood by the camels at the well.
24:31And he said, Come in you blessed of YHWH:wherefore stand you without, seeing I have prepared the house, and room for the camels?
24:32Then the man came into the house, and he unsaddled the camels, and brought litter and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the mens feet that [were] with him.
24:33Afterward the meat [was] set before him:but he said, I will not eat, until I have said my message:And he said, Speak on.
24:34Then he said, I [am] Abrahams servant,
24:35And YHWH has blessed my master wonderfully, that he [is] become great:for he has given him sheep, and beeves, and silver, and gold, and men servants, and maid servants, and camels, and asses.
24:36And Sarah my masters wife has born a son to my master, when she [was] old,and to him has he given all that he has.
24:37Now my master made me swear, saying, You shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
24:38But you shall go to my fathers house and to my kindred, and take a wife to my son.
24:39Then I said to my master, What if the woman will not follow me?
24:40Who answered me, YHWH, before who I walk, will send his Angel with you,and prosper your journey, and you shall take a wife for my son of my kindred and my fathers house.
24:41Then shall you be discharged of my oath, when you come to my kindred:and if they give you not one, you shall be free from my oath.
24:42So I came this day to the well, and said, O YHWH, the Elohim of my master Abraham, if You now prosper my journey which I go,
24:43Behold, I stand by the well of water:when a virgin comes forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray you, a little water of your pitcher to drink,
24:44And she say to me, Drink you,and I will also draw for your camels, let her [be] the wife, which YHWH has prepared for my masters son.
24:45And before I had made an end of speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth, and her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down to the well, and drew water. Then I said to her, Give me drink, I pray you.
24:46And she made haste, and took down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also. So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.
24:47Then I asked her,and said, Whose daughter [are] you? And she answered, The daughter of Bethuel Nahors son, whom Milcah bare to him. Then I put the abillement upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands:
24:48And I bowed down and worshipped YHWH,and blessed YHWH Elohim of my master Abraham, which had brought me the right way to take my masters brothers daughter to his son.
24:49Now therefore, if you will deal mercifully and truly with my master, tell me:and if not, tell me that I may turn me to the right hand or to the left.
24:50Then answered Laban and Bethuel, and said, This thing [is] proceeded of YHWH:we cannot therefore say to you, neither evil nor good.
24:51Behold, Rebehak is before you, take her and go,that she may be your masters sons wife, even as YHWH has said.
24:52And when Abrahams servant heard their words, he bowed himself toward the earth to YHWH.
24:53Then the servant took forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave to Rebekah:also to her brother and to her mother he gave gifts.
24:54Afterward they did eat and drink, both he,and the men that [were] with him,and tarried all night. And when they rose up in the morning, he said, Let me depart to my master.
24:55Then her brother and her mother answered, Let the maid abide with us, at the lest ten days:then shall she go.
24:56But he said to them, Hinder you me not, seeing YHWH has prospered my journey:send me away, that I may go to my master.
24:57Then they said, We will call the maid, and ask her consent.
24:58And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she answered, I will go.
24:59So they let Rebekah their sister go,and her nurse, with Abrahams servant and his men.
24:60And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, You are our sister, grow into thousand thousands, and your seed possess the gate of his enemies.
24:61Then Rebekah arose, and her maids, and rode upon the camels, and followed the man. And the servant took Rebekah, and departed.
24:62Now Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi, (for he dwelt in the South country)
24:63And Isaac went out to pray in the field toward the evening:who lift up his eyes and looked, and behold, the camels came.
24:64Also Rebekah lift up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted down from the camel.
24:65(For she had said to the servant, Who [is] yonder man, that comes in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It [is] my master) So she took a veil, and covered her.
24:66And the servant told Isaac all things, that he had done.
24:67Afterward Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and he took Rebekah, and she was his wife, and he loved her:So Isaac was comforted after his mothers death.

Chapter 25

25:1Now Abraham had taken him another wife called Leah,
25:2Which bare him Zimran,and Jokshan,and Medan,and Midian,and Ishbak,and Shuah.
25:3And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan:And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
25:4Also the sons of Midian [were] Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah all these [were] the sons of Keturah.
25:5And Abraham gave all his goods to Isaac,
25:6But to the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son (while he yet lived) Eastward to the East country.
25:7And this [is] the age of Abrahams life, which he lived, a hundred seventy and five year.
25:8Then Abraham yeelded the spirit, and died in a good age, an old man,and of great years, and [was] gathered to his people.
25:9And his sons, Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, before Mamre.
25:10Which field Abraham bought of the Hittites, where Abraham [was] buried with Sarah his wife.
25:11And after the death of Abraham Elohim blessed Isaac his son,and Isaac dwelt by Beer-lahai-roi.
25:12Now these [are] the generations of Ishmael Abrahams son, whom Hagar the Egyptian Sarahs handmaid bare to Abraham.
25:13And these [are] the names of the sons of Ishmael, name by name, according to their kindreds;the eldest son of Ishmael [was] Nebaioth, then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
25:14And Mishma,and Dumah,and Massa,
25:15Hadar,and Tema, Jetur, Naphish,and Kedemah.
25:16These [are] the sons of Ishmael, and these [are] their names, by their towns and by their castles:to wit, twelve princes of their nations.
25:17(And these [are] the years of the life of Ishmael, a hundred thirty and seven year, and he yeelded the spirit, and died, and [was] gathered to his people)
25:18And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, that [is] towards Egypt, as you go to Asshur. Ishmael dwelt in the presence of all his brethren.
25:19Likewise these [are] the generations of Isaac Abrahams son Abraham begat Isaac,
25:20And Isaac was forty year old, when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramite of Padan Aram, and sister to Laban the Aramite.
25:21And Isaac prayed unto YHWH for his wife, because she [was] barren:and YHWH [was] intreated of him,and Rebekah his wife conceived,
25:22But the children strove together within her:therefore she said, Seeing it [is] so, why [am] I thus? Wherefore she went to ask YHWH.
25:23And YHWH said to her, Two nations [are] in your womb, and two manner of people shall [be] divided out of your bowels, and the one people shall [be] mightier than the other, and the elder shall serve the younger.
25:24Therefore when her time of deliverance [was] fulfilled, behold, twins [were] in her womb.
25:25So he that came out first [was] red,and he [was] all over as a rough garment, and they called his name Esau.
25:26And afterward came his brother out,and his hand held Esau by the heel:therefore his name [was] called Jacob. Now Isaac [was] threescore year old when Rebekah bare them.
25:27And the boys grew, and Esau was a cunning hunter, and lived in the fields:but Jacob was a plain man,and dwelt in tents.
25:28And Isaac loved Esau, for venison [was] his meat, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
25:29Now Jacob sod pottage, and Esau came from the field and [was] weary.
25:30Then Esau said to Jacob, Let me eat, I pray you, of that pottage so red,for I [am] weary. Therefore [was] his name called Edom.
25:31And Jacob said, Sell me even now your birthright.
25:32And Esau said, Lo, I [am] almost dead, what [is] then this birthright to me?
25:33Jacob then said, Swear to me even now. And he swore to him,and sold his birthright to Jacob.
25:34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles:and he did eat and drink, and rose up,and went his way:So Esau contemned his birthright.

Chapter 26

26:1And there was a famine in the land besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Wherefore Isaac went to Abimelech King of the Philistines to Gerar.
26:2For YHWH appeared to him,and said, Go not down into Egypt, but abide in the land which I shall show to you.
26:3Dwell in this land, and I will be with you,and will bless you:for to you,and to your seed I will give all these countries:and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.
26:4Also I will cause your seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give to your seed all these countries:and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth [be] blessed,
26:5Because that Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my ordinance, my commandments, my statutes, and my Laws.
26:6So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.
26:7And the men of the place asked him of his wife, and he said, She [is] my sister:for he feared to say, She [is] my wife, lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me, because of Rebekah:for she [was] beautiful to the eye.
26:8So after he had been there long time, Abimelech King of the Philistines looked out at a window, and lo, he saw Isaac sporting with Rebekah his wife.
26:9Then Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Lo, she [is] of a surety your wife, and why said you, She [is] my sister? To whom Isaac answered, Because I thought this, It may [be] that I shall die for her.
26:10Then Abimelech said, Why have you done this to us? One of the people had almost lien by your wife, so should you have brought sin upon us.
26:11Then Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that touches this man, or his wife, shall die the death.
26:12Afterward Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundred fold by estimation:and so YHWH blessed him.
26:13And the man waxed mighty, and still increased, till he [was] exceeding great,
26:14For he had flocks of sheep, and herds of cattle, and a mighty household:therefore the Philistines had envy at him.
26:15In so much that the Philistines stopped and filled up with earth all the wells, which his fathers servants digged in his father Abrahams time.
26:16Then Abimelech said to Isaac, Get you from us,for you [are] mightier than we a great deal.
26:17Therefore Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
26:18And Isaac returning, digged the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father:for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham, and he gave them the same names, which his father gave them.
26:19Izhaks servants then digged in the valley, and found there a well of living water.
26:20But the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Izhaks herdmen, saying, The water [is] ours:therefore called he the name of the well Esek, because they [were] at strife with him.
26:21Afterward they digged another well, and strove for that also, and he called the name of it Sitnah.
26:22Then he removed from there, and digged an other well, for the which they strove not:therefore called he the name of it Rehoboth, and said, Because YHWH has now made us room, we shall increase upon the earth.
26:23So he went up from there to Beer-sheba.
26:24And YHWH appeared to him the same night, and said, I [am] the Elohim of Abraham your father:fear not,for I [am] with you,and will bless you,and will multiply your seed for my servant Abrahams sake.
26:25Then he built an altar there, and called upon the Name of YHWH,and there spread his tent:where also Izhaks servants digged a well.
26:26Then came Abimelech to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the captain of his army.
26:27To whom Isaac said, Wherefore come you to me, seeing you hate me and have put me away from you?
26:28Who answered, We saw certainly that YHWH was with you,and we thought thus, Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and you,and let us make a covenant with you.
26:29If you shall do us no hurt, as we have not touched you,and as we have done to you nothing but good, and sent you away in peace:you now, the blessed of YHWH, do this.
26:30Then he made them a feast, and they dyd eat and drink.
26:31And they rose up betimes in the morning, and swore one to another:then Isaac let them go,and they departed from him in peace.
26:32And that same day Izhaks servants came and told him of a well, which they had digged, and said to him, We have found water.
26:33So he called it Shibah:therefore the name of the city [is] called Beer-sheba to this day.
26:34Now when Esau was forty year old, he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri an Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon an Hittite also.
26:35And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and to Rebekah.

Chapter 27

27:1And when Isaac was old,and his eyes were dim (so that he could not see) he called Esau his eldest son,and said to him, My son. And he answered him, I am here.
27:2Then he said, Behold, I [am] now old,and know not the day of my death:
27:3Wherefore now, I pray you take your instruments, your quiver and your bow,and get you to the field, that you may take me some venison.
27:4Then make me savory meat, such as I love, and bring it me that I may eat,and that my soul may bless you, before I die.
27:5(Now Rebekah heard, when Isaac spoke to Esau his son) and Esau went into the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
27:6Then Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I have heard your father talking with Esau your brother, saying,
27:7Bring me venison, and make me savory meat, that I may eat and bless you before YHWH, afore my death.
27:8Now therefore, my son, hear my voice in that which I command you.
27:9Get you now to the flock, and bring me from there two good kids of the goats, that I may make pleasant meat of them for your father, such as he loves.
27:10Then shall you bring it to your father, and he shall eat, to the intent that he may bless you before his death.
27:11But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother [is] rough, and I [am] smooth.
27:12My father may possibly feele me,and I shall seem to him to be a mocker:so shall I bring a curse upon me,and not a blessing.
27:13But his mother said to him, upon me [be] your curse, my son:only hear my voice, and go and bring me them.
27:14So he went and set them, and brought them to his mother:and his mother made pleasant meat, such as his father loved.
27:15And Rebekah took fair clothes of her elder son Esau, which [were] in her house, and clothed Jacob her younger son:
27:16And she covered his hands and the smooth of his neck with the skins of the kiddes of the goats.
27:17Afterward she put the pleasant meat and bread, which she had prepared, in the hand of her son Jacob.
27:18And when he came to his father, he said, My father. Who answered, I [am] here:who [are] you, my son?
27:19And Jacob said to his father, I [am] Esau your first born, I have done as you bade me, arise, I pray you:sit up and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.
27:20Then Isaac said to his son, How have you found it so quickly my son? Who said, Because YHWH your Elohim brought it to my hand.
27:21Again said Isaac to Jacob, Come near now, that I may feele you, my son, whether you [be] that my son Esau or not.
27:22Then Jacob came near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, The voice [is] Jacob's voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau.
27:23(For he knew him not, because his hands were rough as his brother Esaus hands:wherefore he blessed him)
27:24Again he said, [Are] you that my son Esau? Who answered, Yes.
27:25Then said he, Bring it me here, and I will eat of my sons venison, that my soul may bless you. And he brought it to him,and he ate:also he brought him wine, and he drank.
27:26Afterward his father Isaac said to him, Come near now,and kiss me, my son.
27:27And he came near and kissed him. Then he smelled the savor of his garments, and blessed him,and said, Behold, the smell of my son [is] as the smell of a field, which YHWH has blessed.
27:28Elohim give you therefore of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of wheat and wine.
27:29Let people [be] your servants, and nations bow to you:[be] Lord over your brethren, and let your mothers children honor you. Cursed [be] he that curses you,and blessed [be] he that blesses you.
27:30And when Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, then came Esau his brother from his hunting,
27:31And he also prepared savory meat and brought it to his father, and said to his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his sons venison, that your soul may bless me.
27:32But his father Isaac said to him, Who [are] you? And he answered, I [am] your son, even your first born Esau.
27:33Then Isaac was stricken with a marvelous great fear, and said, Who and where is he that hunted venison, and brought it me,and I have eat of all before you came? And I have blessed him, therefore he shall be blessed.
27:34When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with a great cry and bitter, out of measure, and said to his father, Bless me, even me also, my father.
27:35Who answered, Your brother came with subtlety, and has taken away your blessing.
27:36Then he said, [Was] he not justly called Jacob? For he has deceived me these two times:he took my birthright, and lo, now has he taken my blessing. Also he said, Have you not reserved a blessing for me?
27:37Then Isaac answered, and said to Esau, Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brethren have I made his servants:also with wheat and wine have I furnished him,and to you now what shall I do, my son?
27:38Then Esau said to his father, Have you but one blessing my father? Bless me, even me also, my father:and Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
27:39Then Isaac his father answered, and said to him, Behold, the fatness of the earth shall be your dwelling place, and you shall have of the dew of heaven from above.
27:40And by your sword shall you live, and shall be your brothers servant. But it shall come to pass, when you shall get the mastery, that you shall break his yoke from your neck.
27:41Therefore Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing, wherewith his father blessed him. And Esau thought in his mind, The days of mourning for my father will come shortly, then I will slay may brother Jacob.
27:42And it [was] told to Rebekah of the words of Esau her elder son,and she sent and called Jacob her younger son,and said to him, Behold, your brother Esau [is] comforted against you, meaning to kill you:
27:43Now therefore my son, hear my voice, arise, and flee you to Haran to my brother Laban,
27:44And tarry with him a while until your brothers fierceness [be] swaged,
27:45And till your brothers wrath turn away from you,and he forget the things, which you have done to him:then will I send and take you from there:why should I [be] deprived of you both in one day?
27:46Also Rebekah said to Isaac, I [am] weary of my life, for the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth like these of the daughters of the land, what avails it me to live?

Chapter 28

28:1Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him,and charged him,and said to him, Take not a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
28:2Arise, get you to Padan Aram to the house of Bethuel your mothers father, and from there take you a wife of the daughters of Laban your mothers brother.
28:3And God all sufficient bless you,and make you to increase, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of people,
28:4And give you the blessing of Abraham, even to you and to your seed with you, that you may inherit the land (wherein you [are] a stranger,) which Elohim gave to Abraham.
28:5Thus Isaac sent forth Jacob, and he went to Padan Aram to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramite, brother to Rebekah, Jacob's and Esaus mother.
28:6When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him to Padan Aram, to set him a wife from there, and given him a charge when he blessed him, saying, You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan,
28:7And that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother, and [was] gone to Padan Aram:
28:8Also Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan displeased Isaac his father,
28:9Then went Esau to Ishmael, and took to the wives, which he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abrahams son, the sister of Nabaioth, to [be] his wife.
28:10Now Jacob departed from Beer-sheba,and went to Haran,
28:11And he came to a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun [was] down, and took of the stones of the place, and laid under his head and slept in the same place.
28:12Then he dreamed, and behold, there stood a ladder upon the earth, and the top of it reached up to heaven:and lo, the Angels of Elohim went up and down by it.
28:13And behold, YHWH stood above it,and said, I [am] YHWH Elohim of Abraham your father, and the Elohim of Isaac:the land, upon the which you sleep, will I give you and your seed.
28:14And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the West, and to the East, and to the North, and to the South, and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
28:15And lo, I [am] with you,and will keep you wherever you go,and will bring you again into this land:for I will not forsake you until I have performed that, that I have promised you.
28:16Then Jacob awoke out of his sleep, and said, Surely YHWH [is] in this place, and I [was] not aware.
28:17And he [was] afraid, and said, How fearful [is] this place! This [is] none other but the house of Elohim, and this [is] the gate of heaven.
28:18Then Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had laid under his head, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
28:19And he called the name of that place Bethel:notwithstanding the name of the city [was] at the first called Luz.
28:20Then Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If Elohim will be with me,and will keep me in this journey which I go,and will give me bread to eat,and clothes to put on:
28:21So that I come again to my fathers house in safety, then shall YHWH be my Elohim.
28:22And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be Gods house:and of all that you shall give me, will I give the tenth to you.

Chapter 29

29:1Then Jacob lift up his feet and came into the East country.
29:2And as he looked about, behold there [was] a well in the field, and lo, three flocks of sheep lay thereby (for at that well [were] the flocks watered) and there [was] a great stone upon the wells mouth.
29:3And there [were] all the flocks gathered, and they rolled the stone from the wells mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the wells mouth in his place.
29:4And Jacob said to them, My brethren, whence [be] you? And they answered, We [are] of Haran.
29:5Then he said to them, Know you Laban the son of Nahor? Who said, We know him.
29:6Again he said to them, [Is] he in good health? And they answered, He [is] in good health, and behold, his daughter Rachel comes with the sheep.
29:7Then he said, Lo, it [is] yet high day, neither [is] it time that the cattle should [be] gathered together:water you the sheep and go feed them.
29:8But they said, We may not until all the flocks [be] brought together, and till men roll the stone from the wells mouth, that we may water the sheep.
29:9While he talked with them, Rachel also came with her fathers sheep, for she kept them.
29:10And as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mothers brother, and the sheep of Laban his mothers brother, then came Jacob near, and rolled the stone from the wells mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mothers brother.
29:11And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lift up his voice and wept.
29:12(For Jacob told Rachel, that he [was] her fathers brother, and that he [was] Rebekahs son) then she ran and told her father.
29:13And when Laban heard tell of Jacob his sisters son, he ran to meet him,and embraced him and kissed him,and brought him to his house:and he told Laban all these things.
29:14To whom Laban said, Well, you [are] my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
29:15For Laban said to Jacob, Though you [be] my brother, should you therefore serve me for nought? Tell me, what shall [be] your wages?
29:16Now Laban had two daughters, the elder called Leah, and the younger called Rachel.
29:17And Leah was tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and fair.
29:18And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.
29:19Then Laban answered, It [is] better that I give her you, than that I should give her to another man:abide with me.
29:20And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days, because he loved her.
29:21Then Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, that I may go in to her:for my term [is] ended.
29:22Wherefore Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
29:23But when the evening was come, he took Leah his daughter and brought her to him,and he went in to her.
29:24And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah, to [be] her servant.
29:25But when the morning was come, behold, it was Leah. Then said he to Laban, Wherefore have you done thus to me? Did not I serve you for Rachel? Wherefore then have you beguiled me?
29:26And Laban answered, It [is] not the manner of this place, to give the younger before the elder.
29:27Fulfill seven years for her,and we will also give you this for the service, which you shall serve me yet seven years more.
29:28Then Jacob did so,and fulfilled her seven years, so he gave him Rachel his daughter to [be] his wife.
29:29Laban also gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his maid to [be] her servant.
29:30So entered he in to Rachel also, and loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served him yet seven years more.
29:31When YHWH saw that Leah [was] despised, he made her fruitful:but Rachel [was] barren.
29:32And Leah conceived and bare a son,and she called his name Reuben:for she said, Because YHWH has looked upon my tribulation, now therefore my husband will love me.
29:33And she conceived again and bare a son,and said, Because YHWH heard that I [was] hated, he has therefore given me this son also, and she called his name Simeon.
29:34And she conceived again and bare a son,and said, Now at this time will my husband keep me company, because I have born him three sons:therefore [was] his name called Levi.
29:35Moreover she conceived again and bare a son, saying, Now will I praise YHWH:therefore she called his name Judah, and left bearing.

Chapter 30

30:1And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
30:2Then Jacob's anger [was] kindled against Rachel, and he said, [Am] I in Gods stead, which has withholden from you the fruit of the womb?
30:3And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in to her,and she shall bear upon my knees, and I shall have children also by her.
30:4Then she gave him Bilhah her maid to wife, and Jacob went in to her.
30:5So Bilhah conceived and bare Jacob a son.
30:6Then said Rachel, Elohim has given sentence on my side, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son:therefore called she his name, Dan.
30:7And Bilhah Rahels maid conceived again, and bare Jacob the second son.
30:8Then Rachel said, with excellent wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have gotten the upper hand:and she called his name, Naphtali.
30:9And when Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
30:10And Zilpah Leahs maid bare Jacob a son.
30:11Then said Leah, A company comes:and she called his name, Gad.
30:12Again Zilpah Leahs maid bare Jacob another son.
30:13Then said Leah, Ah, blessed [am] I,for the daughters will bless me. And she called his name, Asher.
30:14Now Reuben went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then said Rachel to Leah, Give me, I pray you, of your sons mandrakes.
30:15But she answered her, [Is] it a small matter for you to take my husband, except you take my sons mandrakes also? Then said Rachel,Therefore he shall sleep with you this night for your sons mandrakes.
30:16And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him,and said, Come in to me,for I have bought and paid for you with my sons mandrakes:and he slept with her that night.
30:17And Elohim heard Leah and she conceived, and bare to Jacob the fifth son.
30:18Then said Leah, Elohim has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband, and she called his name Issachar.
30:19After, Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
30:20Then Leah said, Elohim has endued me with a good dowry:now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons:and she called his name Zebulun.
30:21After that, she bare a daughter, and she called her name Dinah.
30:22And Elohim remembered Rachel, and Elohim heard her,and opened her womb.
30:23So she conceived and bare a son,and said, Elohim has taken away my rebuke.
30:24And she called his name Joseph, saying, YHWH will give me yet another son.
30:25And as soon as Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away that I may go to my place and to my country.
30:26Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you,and let me go:for you know what service I have done you.
30:27To whom Laban answered, If I have now found favor in your sight tarry:I have perceived that YHWH has blessed me for your sake.
30:28Also he said, Appoint to me your wages, and I will give it you.
30:29But he said to him, You know, what service I have done you,and in what taking your cattle has been under me.
30:30For the little, that you had before I came, is increased into a multitude:and YHWH has blessed you by my coming:but now when shall I travel for my own house also?
30:31Then he said, What shall I give you? And Jacob answered, You shall give me nothing at all:if you will do this thing for me, I will return, feed, and keep your sheep.
30:32I will pass through all your flocks this day,and separate from them all the sheep with little spots and great spots, and all black lambs among the sheep, and the great spotted, and little spotted among the goats:and it shall be my wages.
30:33So shall my righteousness answer for me hereafter, when it shall come for my reward before your face, and every one that has not little or great spots among the goats, and black among the sheep, the same shall [be] theft with me.
30:34Then Laban said, Go to, would God it might be according to your saying.
30:35Therefore he took out the same day the he goats that [were] party coloured and with great spots, and all the she goats with little and great spots, and all that had white in them, and all the black among the sheep, and put them in the keeping of his sons.
30:36And he set three days journey between himself and Jacob. And Jacob kept the rest of Labans sheep.
30:37Then Jacob took rods of green popular, and of hazel, and of the chesnut tree, and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear in the rods.
30:38Then he put the rods, which he had pilled, in the gutters and watering troughes, when the sheep came to drink, before the sheep. (for they [were] in heat, when they came to drink)
30:39And the sheep [were] in heat before the rods, and afterward brought forth young of party color, and with small and great spots.
30:40And Jacob parted these lambs, and turned the faces of the flock towards these lambs party coloured and all manner of black, among the sheep of Laban:so he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not with Labans flock.
30:41And in every ramming time of the stronger sheep, Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the sheep in the gutters, that they might conceive before the rods.
30:42But when the sheep were feeble, he put them not in:and so the feebler were Labans, and the stronger Jacob's.
30:43So the man increased exceedingly, and had many flocks, and maid servants, and men servants, and camels and asses.

Chapter 31

31:1Now he heard the words of Laban sons, saying, Jacob has taken away all that [was] our fathers, and of our fathers goods has he gotten all this honor.
31:2Also Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, that it [was] not toward him as in times past:
31:3And YHWH had said to Jacob, Turn again into the land of your fathers, and to your kindred, and I will be with you.
31:4Therefore Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock.
31:5Then said he to them, I see your fathers countenance, that it is not towards me as it was wont, and the Elohim of my father has been with me.
31:6And you know that I have served your father with all my might.
31:7But your father has deceived me,and changed my wages ten times:but Elohim suffred him not to hurt me.
31:8If he thus said, The spotted shall be your wages, then all the sheep bare spotted:and if he said thus, the party coloured shall be your reward, then bare all the sheep particoloured.
31:9Thus has Elohim taken away your fathers substance, and given it me.
31:10For in ramming time I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, you he goats leaped upon the she goats, that were party coloured with little and great spots spotted.
31:11And the Angel of Elohim said to me in a dream, Jacob. And I answered, Lo, I [am] here.
31:12And he said, Lift up now your eyes, and see all the he goats leaping upon you she goats that [are] party coloured, spotted with little and great spots:for I have seen all that Laban does to you.
31:13I [am] the God of Beth-el, where you anointed the pillar, where you vowed a vow to me. Now arise, get you out of this country and return to the land where you [were] born.
31:14Then answered Rachel and Leah, and said to him, Have we any more portion and inheritance in our fathers house?
31:15Does not he count us as strangers? For he has sold us,and has eaten up and consumed our money.
31:16Therefore all the riches, which Elohim has taken from our father, [is] ours and our childrens:now then whatever Elohim has said to you, do it.
31:17Then Jacob rose up,and set his sons and his wives upon camels.
31:18And he carried away all his flocks, and all his substance which he had gotten, to wit, his riches, which he had gotten in Padan Aram, to go to Isaac his father to the land of Canaan.
31:19When Laban [was] gone to shere his sheep, Then Rachel stole her fathers idols.
31:20Thus Jacob stole away you heart of Laban the Aramite:for he told him not that he fled.
31:21So fled he with all that he had,and he rose up,and passed the river, and set his face toward mount Gilead.
31:22And the third day after [was] it told Laban, that Jacob fled.
31:23Then he took his brethren with him,and followed after him seven days journey, and overtook him at mount Gilead.
31:24And Elohim came to Laban the Aramite in a dream by night, and said to him, Take heed that you speak not to Jacob ought save good.
31:25Then Laban overtook Jacob, and Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount:and Laban also with his brethren pitched upon mount Gilead.
31:26Then Laban said to Jacob, What have you done? You have even stolen away my heart and carried away my daughters as though they had [been] taken captives with the sword.
31:27Wherefore did you fly so secretly and steal away from me,and did not tell me,that I might have sent you forth with mirth and with songs, with timbrel and with harp?
31:28But you have not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters:now you have done foolishly in doing so.
31:29I [am] able to do you evil:but the Elohim of your father spoke to me yesternight, saying, Take heed that you speak not to Jacob ought save good.
31:30Now though you went your way, because you greatly longed after your fathers house, yet wherefore have you stolen my gods?
31:31Then Jacob answered, and said to Laban, Because I [was] afraid, and thought that you would have taken your daughters from me.
31:32But with whom you find your gods, let him not live. Search you before our brethren what I have of yours, and take it to you, (but Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them)
31:33Then came Laban into Jacob's tent, and into Leahs tent, and into the two maids tents, but found them not. So he went out of Leahs tent, and entered into Rahels tent.
31:34(Now Rachel had taken the idols, and put them in the camels litter and sat down upon them) and Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
31:35Then said she to her father, My Lord, [be] not angry that I cannot rise up before you:for the custom of women [is] upon me:so he searched, but found not the idols.
31:36The Jacob [was] wroth, and chode with Laban:Jacob also answered and said to Laban, What have I trespassed? What have I offended, that you have pursued after me?
31:37Seeing you have searched all my stuff, what have you foud of all your household stuff? Put it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both.
31:38This twenty year I have bin with you:your ewes and your goats have not cast their young, and the rams of your flock have I not eaten.
31:39Whatever [was] torn of beasts, I brought it not to you,but made it good myself:of my hand did you require it, [were] it stolen by day or stolen by night.
31:40I was in the day consumed with heat, and with frost in the night, and my sleep departed from my eyes.
31:41Thus have I [been] twenty year in your house, and served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your sheep, and you have changed my wages ten times.
31:42Except the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac had been with me, surely you had sent me away now empty:but Elohim beheld my tribulation, and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you yesternight.
31:43Then Laban answered, and said to Jacob, These daughters [are] my daughters, and these sons [are] my sons, and these sheep [are] my sheep, and all that you see, [is] mine, and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their sons which they have born?
31:44Now therefore come and let us make a covenant, I and you, which may be a witness between me and you.
31:45Then took Jacob a stone, and set it up as a pillar:
31:46And Jacob said to his brethren, Gather stones:who brought stones, and made a heap, and they did eat there upon the heap.
31:47And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha,and Jacob called it Galeed.
31:48For Laban said, This heap [is] witness between me and you this day:therefore he called the name of it Galeed.
31:49Also he called it Mizpah, because he said, YHWH look between me and you, when we shall [be] departed one from another,
31:50If you shall vex my daughters, or shall take wives beside my daughters:there [is] no man with us, behold, Elohim [is] witness between me and you.
31:51Moreover Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold the pillar, which I have set between me and you,
31:52This heap shall [be] witness, and the pillar shall [be] witness, that I will not come over this heap to you,and that you shall not pass over this heap and this pillar to me for evil.
31:53The Elohim of Abraham, and the Elohim of Nabor, and the Elohim of their father [be] judge between us:But Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
31:54Then Jacob did offer a sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread. And they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
31:55And early in the morning Laban rose up and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them, and Laban departing, went to his place again.

Chapter 32

32:1Now Jacob went forth on his journey and the Angels of Elohim met him.
32:2And when Jacob saw them, he said, This [is] Gods host, and called the name of the same place Mahanaim.
32:3Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir into the country of Edom:
32:4To whom he gave commandment, saying, Thus shall you speak to my lord Esau:your servant Jacob says thus, I have [been] a stranger with Laban, and tarried to this time.
32:5I have beeves also and Asses, sheep, and men servants, and women servants, and have sent to show my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.
32:6So you messengers came again to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and he also comes against you and four hundred men with him.
32:7Then Jacob [was] greatly afraid, and [was] sore troubled, and divided the people that [was] with him,and the sheep, and the beeves, and the camels into two companies.
32:8For he said, If Esau come to the one company and smite it, the other company shall escape.
32:9Moreover Jacob said, O Elohim of my father Abraham, and Elohim of my father Isaac:YHWH, which said to me, Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,
32:10I [am] not worthy of the lest of all the mercies, and all the truth, which you have showed to your servant:for with my staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I got two bads.
32:11I pray you, Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau:for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me,and the mother upon the children.
32:12For you said;I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which can not [be] numbered for multitude.
32:13And he tarried there the same night, and took of that which came to had, a present for Esau his brother:
32:14Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams:
32:15Thirty milk camels with their coltes, forty kine, and ten bullocks, twenty she asses and ten foles.
32:16So he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves, and said to his servants, Pass before me,and put a space between drove and drove.
32:17And he commanded the foremost, saying, If Esau my brother meet you,and ask you, saying, Whose servant [are] you? And where go you? And whose [are] these before you?
32:18Then you shall say, They [be] your servant Jacob's:it [is] a present sent to my lord Esau:and behold, he himself also [is] behind us.
32:19So likewise commanded he the second and the third, and all that followed the droues, saying, After this manner, you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.
32:20And you shall say moreover, Behold, your servant Jacob comes after us (for he thought, I will appease his wrath with the present that goes before me,and afterward I will see his face:it may [be] that he will accept me.)
32:21So went the present before him:but he tarried that night with the company.
32:22And he rose up the same night, and took his two wives, and his two maids, and his eleven children, and went over the forde Jabbok.
32:23And he took them, and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had.
32:24Now when Jacob [was] left himself alone, there wrestled a man with him to the breaking of the day.
32:25And he saw that he could not prevail against him:therefore he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh [was] loosed, as he wrestled with him.
32:26And he said, Let me go,for the morning appears. Who answered, I will not let you go except you bless me.
32:27Then said he to him, What [is] your name? And he said, Jacob.
32:28Then said he, Your name shall [be] called Jacob no more, but Israel:because you have had power with Elohim, you shall also prevail with men.
32:29Then Jacob demaded, saying, Tell me, I pray you, your name. And he said, Wherefore now do you ask my name? And he blessed him there
32:30And Jacob called the name of the place, Peniel:for, said he, I have seen Elohim face to face, and my life [is] preserved.
32:31And the sun rose up to him as he passed Peniel, and he halted upon his thigh.
32:32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew that shrank in the hollow of the thigh, to this day:because he touched the sinew that shrank in the hollow of Jacob's thigh.

Chapter 33

33:1And as Jacob lift up his eyes, and looked, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men:and he divided the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the two maids.
33:2And he put the maids, and their children foremost, and Leah, and her children after, and Rachel, and Joseph hindermost.
33:3So he went before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
33:4Then Esau ran to meet him,and embraced him,and fell on his neck, and kissed him,and they wept.
33:5And he lift up his eyes, and saw the women, and the children, and said, Who [are] these with you? And he answered, They [are] you children whom Elohim of his grace has given your servant.
33:6Then came the maids near, they, and their children, and bowed themselves.
33:7Leah also with her children came near and made obeisance:and after Joseph and Rachel drew near, and did reverence.
33:8Then he said, What mean you by all this drove, which I met? Who answered, I have sent it,that I may find favor in the sight of my lord:
33:9And Esau said, I have enough, my brother:keep that you have to yourself.
33:10But Jacob answered, No, I pray you:if I have found grace now in your sight, then receive my present at my hand:for I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of Elohim, because you have accepted me.
33:11I pray you take my blessing, that [is] brought you:for Elohim has had mercy on me,and therefore I have all things:so he compelled him,and he took it.
33:12And he said, Let us take our journey and go,and I will go before you.
33:13Then he answered him, My lord knows, that the children [are] tender, and the ewes and kine with young under my hand:and if they should overdrive them one day, all the flock would die.
33:14Let now my lord go before his servant, and I will drive softly, according to the pase of the cattle, which [is] before me,and as the children [be] able to endure, until I come to my lord to Seir.
33:15Then Esau said, I will leave then some of my folk with you. And he answered, what needs this? Let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
33:16So Esau returned, and went his way that same day to Seir.
33:17And Jacob went forward toward Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle:therefore he called the name of the place Succoth.
33:18Afterward, Jacob came safe to Shechem a city, which [is] in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram, and pitched before the city.
33:19And there he bought a parcel of ground, where he pitched his tent, at the hand of the sons of Hamor Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.
33:20And he set up there an altar, and called it, The mighty Elohim of Israel.

Chapter 34

34:1Then Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of that country.
34:2Whom when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite lord of that country saw, he took her,and lay with her,and defiled her.
34:3So his heart clave to Dinah the daughter of Jacob:and he loved the maid, and spoke kindly to the maid.
34:4Then said Shechem to his father Hamor, saying, Get me this maid to wife.
34:5(Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his cattle in the field:therefore Jacob held his peace, until they were come.)
34:6Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to commune with him.
34:7And when the sons of Jacob [were] come out of the field and heard it, it grieved the men,and they [were] very angry, because he had wrought villainy in Israel, in that he had lain with Jacob's daughter:which thing ought not to [be] done.
34:8And Hamor communed with them, saying, the soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter:give her him to wife, I pray you.
34:9So make affinity with us:give your daughters to us,and take our daughters to you,
34:10And you shall dwell with us,and the land shall be before you:dwell, and do your business in it,and have your possessions therein.
34:11Shechem also said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give whatever you shall appoint me.
34:12Ask of me abundantly both dowry and gifts, and I will give as you appoint me, so that you give me the maid to wife.
34:13Then the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, talking deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
34:14And they said to them, We can not do this thing, to give our sister to an uncircumcised man:for that [were] a reproof to us.
34:15But in this will we consent to you, if you will be as we are, that every man child among you be circumcised:
34:16Then will we give our daughters to you,and we will take your daughters to us,and will dwell with you,and be one people.
34:17But if you will not hearken to us to [be] circumcised, then will we take our daughter and depart.
34:18Now their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
34:19And the young man delighted not to do the thing because he loved Jacob's daughter:he [was] also the most set by of all his fathers house.
34:20Then Hamor and Shechem his Son went to the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
34:21These men [are] peaceable with us:and that they may dwell in the land, and do their affairs therein (for behold, the land has room enough for them) let us take their daughters to wives, and give them our daughters.
34:22Only herein will the men consent to us for to dwell with us,and to be one people, if all the men children among us be circumcised as they are circumcised.
34:23Shall not their flocks and their substance and all their cattle [be] ours? Only let us consent herein to them, and they will dwell with us.
34:24And to Hamor, and Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city:and all the men children [were] circumcised, even all that went out of the gate of his city.
34:25And on the third day (when they were sore) two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren took either of them his sword and went into the city boldly, and slew every male.
34:26They slew also Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went their way.
34:27Again the other sons of Jacob came upon the dead, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
34:28They took their sheep and their beeves, and their asses, and whatever [was] in the city, and in the fields.
34:29Also they carried away captive and spoiled all their goods, and all their children and their wives, and all that [was] in the houses.
34:30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have troubled me,and made me stink among the inhabitants of the land, will the Canaanites, as the Perizzites, and I [being] few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me,and slay me,and so shall I,and my house [be] destroyed.
34:31And they answered, Should he abuse our sister as a whore?

Chapter 35

35:1Then Elohim said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there, and make there an altar to God,that appeared to you, when you fled from Esau your brother.
35:2Then said Jacob to his household and to all that [were] with him, Put away the strange gods that [are] among you,and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments:
35:3For we will rise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, which heard me in the day of my tribulation, and was with me in the way which I went.
35:4And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods, which [were] in their hands, and all their earrings which [were] in their ears, and Jacob hid them under an oke, which [was] by Shechem.
35:5Then they went on their journey, and the fear of Elohim was upon the cities that were around about them:so that they did not follow after the sons of Jacob.
35:6So came Jacob to Luz, which [is] in the land of Canaan:(the same [is] Bethel) he and all the people that [was] with him.
35:7And he built there an altar, and had called the place, The Elohim of Bethel, because that God appeared to him there, when he fled from his brother.
35:8Then Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and [was] buried beneath Bethel under an oke:and he called the name of it Allon Bachuth.
35:9Again Elohim appeared to Jacob, after he came out of Padan Aram, and blessed him.
35:10Moreover Elohim said to him, Your name is Jacob:your name shall be no more called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name:and he called his name Israel.
35:11Again Elohim said to him, I am God all sufficient. Grow, and multiply. A nation and a multitude of nations shall spring of you,and Kings shall come out of your loins.
35:12Also I will give the land, which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, to you:and to your seed after you will I give that land.
35:13So Elohim ascended from him in the place where he had talked with him.
35:14And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, a pillar of stone, and poured drink offering thereon:also he poured oil thereon.
35:15And Jacob called the name of the place, where Elohim spoke with him, Bethel.
35:16Then they departed from Bethel, and when there was about half a days journey of ground to come to Ephrath, Rachel travailed, and in travailing she was in peril.
35:17And when she was in pains of her labor, the midwife said to her, Fear not:for you shall have this son also.
35:18Then as she was about to yield up the Ghost (for she died) she called his name Ben-oni,but his father called him Benjamin.
35:19Thus died Rachel, and [was] buried in the way to Ephrath, which [is] Bethlehem.
35:20And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave:This [is] the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
35:21Then Israel went forward, and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.
35:22Now, when Israel dwelt in that land, Reuben went, and lay with Bilhah his fathers concubine, and it came to Israels ear. And Jacob had twelve sons.
35:23The sons of Leah:Reuben Jacob's eldest son,and Simeon,and Levi,and Judah,and Issachar,and Zebulun.
35:24The sons of Rachel:Joseph and Benjamin.
35:25And the sons of Bilhah Rachel's maid:Dan and Naphtali.
35:26And the sons of Zilpah Leah's maid:Gad and Asher. These [are] the sons of Jacob, which [were] born him in Padan Aram.
35:27Then Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mamre a city of Arba:this [is] Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac [were] strangers.
35:28And the days of Isaac were a hundred and fourscore years.
35:29And Isaac gave up the ghost and died, and [was] gathered to his people, [being] old and full of days:and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Chapter 36

36:1Now these [are] the generations of Esau, which [is] Edom.
36:2Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan:Adah the daughter of Elon an Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon an Hivite,
36:3And took Basemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.
36:4And Adah bare to Esau, Eliphaz:and Basemath bare Revel.
36:5Also Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah:these [are] the sons of Esau which [were] born to him in the land of Canaan.
36:6So Esau took his wives and his sons, and his daughters, and all the souls of his house, and his flocks, and all his cattle, and all his substance, which he had gotten in the land of Canaan, and went into an other country from his brother Jacob.
36:7For their riches were so great, that they could not dwell together, and the land, wherein they were strangers, could not receive them because of their flocks.
36:8Therefore dwelt Esau in mount Seir:this Esau [is] Edom.
36:9So these [are] the generations of Esau father of Edom in mount Seir.
36:10These [are] the names of Esau's sons:Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau, and Revel the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
36:11And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.
36:12And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son,and bare to Eliphaz, Amalek:these be the sons of Adah Esau's wife.
36:13And these are the sons of Revel:Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah:these were the sons of Basemath Esau's wife.
36:14And these were the sons of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon Esau's wife:for she bare to Esau, Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.
36:15These [were] Dukes of the sons of Esau:the sons of Eliphaz, the first born of Esau:Duke Teman, Duke Omar, Duke Zepho, Duke Kenaz,
36:16Duke Korah, Duke Gatam, Duke Amalek:these [are] the Dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom:these [were] the sons of Adah.
36:17And these [are] the sons of Revel Esau's son:Duke Nahath, Duke Zerah, Duke Shammah, Duke Mizzah:these [are] the Dukes that came of Revel in the land of Edom:these [are] the sons of Basemath Esau's wife.
36:18Likewise these [were] the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife:Duke Jeush, Duke Jaalam, Duke Korah:these Dukes came of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah Esau's wife.
36:19These [are] the children of Esau, and these [are] the Dukes of them:This Esau [is] Edom.
36:20These [are] the sons of Seir the Horite, which inhabited the land before, Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah.
36:21And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan:these [are] the Dukes of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom.
36:22And the sons of Lotan were, Hori and Hemam, and Lotan's sister was Timna.
36:23And the sons of Shobal [were] these:Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
36:24And these [are] the sons of Zibeon:Both Anah, and Anah:this [was] Anah that found mules in the wilderness, as he fed his father Zibeon asses.
36:25And the children of Anah [were] these:Dishon and Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah.
36:26Also these [are] the sons of Dishon:Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.
36:27The sons of Ezer [are] these:Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.
36:28The sons of Dishan [are] these:Uz,and Aran.
36:29These [are] the Dukes of the Horites:Duke Lotan, Duke Shobal, Duke Zibeon, Duke Anah,
36:30Duke Dishon, Duke Ezer, Duke Dishan:these [be] the Dukes of the Horites, after their Dukedomes in the land of Seir.
36:31And these [are] the Kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any King over the children of Israel.
36:32Then Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city [was] Dinhabah.
36:33And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
36:34When Jobab also [was] dead, Husham of the land of Temanites reigned in his stead.
36:35And after the death of Husham, Hadad the son of Bedad, which slew Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead, and the name of his city [was] Avith.
36:36When Hadad [was] dead, then Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.
36:37When Samlah [was] dead, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-river by the river, reigned in his stead.
36:38When Saul died, Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.
36:39And after the death of Baal-hanan the son of Achbor, Hadar reigned in his stead, and the name of his city [was] Pau:and his wives name Mehetabel the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
36:40Then these [are] the names of the Dukes of Esau according to their families, their places and by their names:Duke Timnah, Duke Alvah, Duke Jetheth,
36:41Duke Aholibamah, Duke Elah, Duke Pinon,
36:42Duke Kenaz, Duke Teman, Duke Mibzar,
36:43Duke Magdiel, Duke Iram:these [be] the Dukes of Edom, according to their habitations, in the land of their inheritance. This Esau [is] the father of Edom.

Chapter 37

37:1Jacob now dwelt in the land, wherein his father [was] a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
37:2These are the generations of Jacob, when Joseph was seventeen year old:he kept sheep with his brethren, and the child was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his fathers wives. And Joseph brought to their father their evil saying.
37:3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he begat him in his old age,and he made him a coat of many colors.
37:4So when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, than they hated him,and could not speak peaceably to him.
37:5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and told his brethren, who hated him so much the more.
37:6For he said to them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed.
37:7Behold now, we [were] binding sheaves in the midst of the field:and lo, my sheaf arose and also stood upright, and behold, your sheaves compassed round about, and did reverence to my sheaf.
37:8Then his brethren said to him, What, shall you reign over us,and rule us? Or shall you have altogether dominion over us? And they hated him so much the more, for his dreams, and for his words.
37:9Again he dreamed an other dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have had one dream more, and behold, the Sun and the Moon and eleven stars did reverence to me.
37:10Then he told it to his father and to his brethren, and his father rebuked him,and said to him, What [is] this dream, which you have dreamed? Shall I,and your mother, and your brethren come in deed and fall on the ground before you?
37:11And his brethren envied him,but his father noted the saying.
37:12Then his brethren went to keep their fathers sheep in Shechem.
37:13And Israel said to Joseph, Do not your brethren keep in Shechem? Come and I will send you to them.
37:14And he answered him, I [am] here. Then he said to him, Go now, see whether it [be] well with your brethren, and how the flocks prosper, and bring me word again. So he sent him from the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
37:15Then a man found him:for lo, he [was] wandering in the field, and the man asked him, saying, What seek you?
37:16And he answered, I seek my brethren:tell me, I pray you, where they keep sheep.
37:17And the man said, they [are] departed here:for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. Then went Joseph after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
37:18And when they saw him a far off, even before he came at them, they conspired against him for to slay him.
37:19For they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer comes.
37:20Come now therefore, and let us slay him,and cast him into some pit,and we will say, A wicked beast has devoured him:then we shall see, what will come of his dreams.
37:21But when Reuben heard that, he delivered him out of their hands, and said, Let us not kill him.
37:22Also Reuben said to them, Shed not blood, but cast him into this pit that [is] in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him. Thus he said, that he might deliver him out of their hand, and restore him to his father again.
37:23Now when Joseph was come to his brethren, they stript Joseph out of his coat, his colors coat that was upon him.
37:24And they took him,and cast him into a pit,and the pit [was] empty, without water in it.
37:25Then they sat them down to eat bread:and they lift up their eyes and looked, and behold, there came a company of Ishmeelites from Gilead, and their camels laden with spices, and balm, and myrrh, and [were] going to carry it down into Egypt.
37:26Then Judah said to his brethren, What avails it, if we slay our brother, though we keep his blood secret?
37:27Come and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hands be upon him:for he is our brother and our flesh:and his brethren obeyed.
37:28Then the Midianites marchant men passed by,and they drew forth, and lift Joseph out of the pit,and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver:who brought Joseph into Egypt.
37:29Afterward Reuben returned to the pit,and behold, Joseph [was] not in the pit:then he rent his clothes,
37:30And returned to his brethren, and said, The child [is] not yonder, and I, where shall I go?
37:31And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood.
37:32So they sent that colors coat, and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found:see now, whether it [be] your sons coat, or no.
37:33Then he knew it and said, It [is] my sons coat:a wicked beast has devoured him:Joseph [is] surely torn in pieces.
37:34And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth about his loins, and sorrowed for his son a long season.
37:35Then all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him,but he would not [be] comforted, but said, Surely I will go down into the grave to my son mourning:so his father wept for him.
37:36And the Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar an Eunuch of Pharaohs, and his chief steward.

Chapter 38

38:1And at that time Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a man called Hirah an Adullamite.
38:2And Judah saw there the daughter of a man called Shua a Canaanite:and he took her to wife, and went in to her.
38:3So she conceived and bare a son,and he called his name Er.
38:4And she conceived again, and bare a son,and she called his name Onan.
38:5Moreover she bare yet a son, whom she called Shelah:and Judah was at Chezib when she bare him.
38:6Then Judah took a wife to Er his first born son whose name [was] Tamar.
38:7Now Er the first born of Judah was wicked in the sight of YHWH:therefore YHWH slew him.
38:8Then Judah said to Onan, Go in to your brothers wife, and do the office of a kinsman to her,and raise up seed to your brother.
38:9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his:therefore when he went in to his brothers wife, he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.
38:10And it [was] wicked in the eyes of YHWH, which he did:wherefore he slew him also.
38:11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow in your fathers house, till Shelah my son grow up (for he thought thus,Lest he die as well as his brethren.) So Tamar went and dwelt in her fathers house.
38:12And in process of time also the daughter of Shua Judah's wife died. Then Judah, when he had left mourning, went up to his sheep sheepshearers to Timnah, he,and his neighbor Hirah the Adullamite.
38:13And it [was] told Tamar, saying, behold, your father in law goes up to Timnah, to sheep his sheep.
38:14Then she put her widows garments off from her,and covered her with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat down in Pethah-enaim, which [is] by the way to Timnah, because she saw that Shelah [was] grown, and she [was] not given to him to wife.
38:15When Judah saw her, he judged her a whore:for she had covered her face.
38:16And he turned to the way towards her,and said, Come, I pray you, let me lie with you. (for he knew not that she [was] his daughter in law) And she answered, What will you give me for to lie with me?
38:17Then said he, I will send you a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Well, if you will give me a pledge, till you send it.
38:18Then he said, What [is] the pledge that I shall give you? And she answered, Your signet, and your cloak, and your staff that [is] in your hand. So he gave it her,and lay by her,and she [was] with child by him.
38:19Then she rose, and went and put her veil from her and put on her widows clothing.
38:20Afterward Judah sent a kid of the goats by the hand of his neighbor the Adullamite, for to receive his pledge from the woman's hand:but he found her not.
38:21Then asked he the men of that place, saying, Where is you whore, that sat in Enaim by the way side? And they answered, There was no whore here.
38:22He came therefore to Judah again, and said, I can not find her,and also the men of the place said, There was no whore there.
38:23Then Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed:behold, I sent this kid,and you have not found her.
38:24Now after three months, one told Judah, saying, Tamar your daughter in law has played the whore, and lo, with playing the whore, she is great with child. Then Judah said, Bring you her forth and let her be burnt.
38:25When she [was] brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, to whom these things pertain, [am] I with child:and said also, Look, I pray you, whose these [are], the seal, and the cloak, and the staff.
38:26Then Judah knew them, and said, She [is] more righteous than I:for she has done it because I gave her not to Shelah my son. So he lay with her no more.
38:27Now, when the time was come that she should be delivered, behold, there were twins in her womb.
38:28And when she was in travel, the one put out his hand:and the midwife took and bound a red thread about his hand, saying, This is come out first.
38:29But when he plucked his hand back again, lo, his brother came out,and the midwife said, How have you broken the breach upon you? And his name was called Perez.
38:30And afterward came out his brother that had the red thread about his hand, and his name [was] called Zerah.

Chapter 39

39:1Now Joseph [was] brought down into Egypt:and Potiphar an Eunuch of Pharaohs (and his chief steward an Egyptian) bought him at the hand of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him there.
39:2And YHWH was with Joseph, and he was a man that prospered and was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
39:3And his master saw that YHWH [was] with him,and that YHWH made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
39:4So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him:and he made him ruler of his house, and put all that he had in his hand.
39:5And from that time that he had made him ruler over his house and over all that he had, YHWH blessed the Egyptians house for Joseph's sake:and the blessing of YHWH was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
39:6Therefore he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and took accompt of nothing, that was with him, save only of the bread, which he did eat. And Joseph was a fair person, and well favored.
39:7Now therefore after these things, his masters wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, Lie with me.
39:8But he refused and said to his masters wife, Behold, my master knows not what he has in the house with me,but has committed all that he has to my hand.
39:9There [is] no man greater in this house than I:neither has he kept any thing from me,but only you, because you [are] his wife:how then can I do this great wickedness and so sin against Elohim?
39:10And albeit she spoke to Joseph day by day, yet he hearkened not to her, to lie with her, or to be in her company.
39:11Then on a certain day Joseph entered into the house, to do his business:and there was no man of the household in the house:
39:12Therefore she caught him by his garment, saying, Sleep with me:but he left his garment in her hand and fled, and got him out.
39:13Now when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled out,
39:14She called to the men of her house, and told them, saying, Behold, he has brought in an Hebrew to us to mock us:who came in to me for to have slept with me:but I cried with a loud voice.
39:15And when he heard that I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me,and fled away, and got him out.
39:16So she laid up his garment by her, until her lord came home.
39:17Then she told him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which you have brought to us, came in to me, to mock me.
39:18But as soon as I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me,and fled out.
39:19Then when his master heard the words of his wife, which she told him, saying, After this manner did your servant to me, his anger was kindled.
39:20And Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, in the place, where the kings prisoners lay bound:and there he was in prison.
39:21But YHWH was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and got him favor in the sight of the master of the prison.
39:22And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and whatever they did there, that did he.
39:23And the keeper of the prison looked to nothing that [was] under his hand, seeing that YHWH [was] with him:for whatever he did, YHWH made it to prosper.

Chapter 40

40:1And after these things, the butler of the King of Egypt and his baker offended their lord the King of Egypt.
40:2And Pharaoh [was] angry against his two officers, against the chief butler, and against the chief baker.
40:3Therefore he put them in ward in his chief stewards house, in the prison and place where Joseph [was] bound.
40:4And the chief steward gave Joseph charge over them, and he served them:and they continued a season in ward.
40:5And they both dreamed a dream, either of them his dream in one night, each one according to the interpretation of his dream, both the butler and the baker of the King of Egypt, which [were] bound in the prison.
40:6And when Joseph came in to them in the morning, and looked upon them, behold, they [were] sad.
40:7And he asked Pharaohs officers, that [were] with him in his masters ward, saying, Wherefore look you so sadly today?
40:8Who answered him, We have dreamed, each one a dream, and there [is] none to interpret the same. Then Joseph said to them, [Are] not interpretations of Elohim? Tell them me now.
40:9So the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine [was] before me,
40:10And in the vine [were] three branches, and as it budded, her flower came forth:and the clusters of grapes waxed ripe.
40:11And I had Pharaohs cup in my hand, and I took the grapes, and wrung the into Pharaohs cup,and I gave the cup into Pharaohs hand.
40:12Then Joseph said to him, This [is] the interpretation of it:The three branches [are] three days.
40:13Within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head, and restore you to your office, and you shall give Pharaohs cup into his hand after the old manner, when you were his butler.
40:14But have me in remembrance with you, when you [are] in good case, and show mercy, I pray you, to me,and make mention of me to Pharaoh, that you may bring me out of this house.
40:15For I [was] stolen away by theft out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing, wherefore they should put me in the dungeon.
40:16And when the chief baker saw that the interpretation [was] good, he said to Joseph, Also me thought in my dream that I had three white baskets on my head.
40:17And in the uppermost basket there [was] of all manner baked meats for Pharaoh:and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
40:18Then Joseph answered, and said, This [is] the interpretation thereof:The three baskets [are] three days:
40:19Within three days shall Pharaoh take your head from you,and shall hang you on a tree, and the birds shall eat your flesh from off you.
40:20And so the third day, which was Pharaohs birthday, he made a feast to all his servants:and he lifted up the head of the chief butler, and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
40:21And he restored the chief butler to his butlership, who gave the cup into Pharaohs hand,
40:22But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
40:23Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Chapter 41

41:1And two years after, Pharaoh also dreamed, and behold, he stood by a river,
41:2And lo, there came out of the river seven goodly kine and fatfleshed, and they fed in a meadow:
41:3And lo, seven other kine came up after the out of the river, evil favored and lean fleshed, and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.
41:4And the ill-favored and lean fleshed kine did eat up the seven well-favored and fat kine:so Pharaoh awoke.
41:5Again he slept, and dreamed the second time:and behold, seven ears of corn grew upon one stalk, rank and goodly.
41:6And lo, seven thin ears, and blasted with the east wind, sprang up after them:
41:7And the thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. Then Pharaoh awaked, and lo, it [was] a dream.
41:8Now when the morning came, his spirit was troubled:therefore he sent and called all the soothsayers of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof, and Pharaoh told them his dreams:but none could interpret them to Pharaoh.
41:9Then spoke the chief butler to Pharaoh, saying, I call to mind my faults this day.
41:10Pharaoh [being] angry with his servants, put me in ward in the chief stewards house, both me and the chief baker.
41:11Then we dreamed a dream in one night, both I,and he:we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.
41:12And there [was] with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the chief steward, whom when we told, he declared our dreams to us, to every one he declared according to his dream.
41:13And as he declared to us, so it came to pass:for he restored me to my office, and hanged him.
41:14Then sent Pharaoh, and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of prison, and he shaved him,and changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh.
41:15Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and no man can interpret it,and I have heard say of you, that when you hear a dream, you can interpret it.
41:16And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, Without me Elohim shall answer for the wealth of Pharaoh.
41:17And Pharaoh said to Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood by the bank of the river:
41:18And lo, there came up out of the river seven fat fleshed, and well-favored kine, and they fed in the meadow.
41:19Also lo, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill-favored,and land:I never saw the like in all the land of Egypt, for ill-favored.
41:20And the lean and ill-favored kine did eat up the first seven fat kine.
41:21And when they had eaten them up, it could not [be] known that they had eaten them, but they [were] still as ill-favored, as they [were] at the beginning:so did I awake.
41:22Moreover I saw in my dream, and behold, seven ears sprang out of one stalk, full and fair.
41:23And lo, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the East wind, sprang up after them.
41:24And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears. Now I have told the soothsayers, and none can declare it to me.
41:25Then Joseph answered Pharaoh, Both Pharaohs dreams [are] one. Elohim has showed Pharaoh, what he [is] about to do.
41:26The seven good kine [are] seven years, and the seven good ears [are] seven years:this [is] one dream.
41:27Likewise the seven thin and ill-favored kine, that came out after them, are seven years:and the seven empty ears blasted with the East wind, are seven years of famine.
41:28This [is] the thing which I have said to Pharaoh, that Elohim has showed to Pharaoh, what he [is] about to do.
41:29Behold, there come seven years of great plenty in all the land of Egypt.
41:30Again, there shall arise after them seven years of famine, so that all the plenty shall [be] forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land:
41:31Neither shall the plenty [be] known in the land, by reason of this famine that shall come after:for it shall [be] exceeding great.
41:32And therefore the dream [was] doubled to Pharaoh the second time, because the thing [is] established by Elohim, and Elohim pass to perform it.
41:33Now therefore let Pharaoh provide for a man of understanding and wisdom, and set him over the land of Egypt.
41:34Let Pharaoh make and appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.
41:35Also let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh for food, in the cities, and let them keep it.
41:36So the food shall be for the provision of the land, against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land perish not by famine.
41:37And the saying pleased Pharaoh and all his servants.
41:38Then said Pharaoh to his servants, Can we find such a man as this, in whom [is] the Spirit of Elohim?
41:39The Pharaoh said to Joseph,For as much as Elohim has showed you all this, there [is] no man of understanding, or of wisdom like to you.
41:40You shall be over my house, and at your word shall all my people be armed, only in the kings throne will I be above you.
41:41Moreover Pharaoh said to Joseph, Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.
41:42And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in garments of fine linen, and put a golden chain about his neck.
41:43So he set him upon the best chariot that he had, save one:and they cried before him, Before, and placed him over all the land of Egypt.
41:44Again Pharaoh said to Joseph, I [am] Pharaoh, and without you shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.
41:45And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah:and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Pherah prince of On. Then went Joseph abroad in the land of Egypt.
41:46And Joseph [was] thirty year old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt:and Joseph departing from the presence of Pharaoh, went throughout all the land of Egypt.
41:47And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth store.
41:48And he gathered up all the food of the seven plenteous years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up food in the cities:the food of the field, that was round about every city, laid he up in the same.
41:49So Joseph gathered wheat, like to the sand of the sea in multitude out of measure, until he left counting:for it [was] without number.
41:50Now to Joseph [were] born two sons (before the years of famine came) which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah prince of On bare to him.
41:51And Joseph called the name of the first born Manasseh:for Elohim, said he, has made me forget all my labor and all my fathers household.
41:52Also he called the name of the second, Ephraim:For Elohim, said he has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.
41:53So the seven years of the plenty that was in the land of Egypt were ended.
41:54Then began the seven years of famine to come, according as Joseph had said:and the famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt was bread.
41:55At the length all the land of Egypt [was] famished, and the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, Go to Joseph:what he says to you, do you.
41:56When the famine was upon all the land, Joseph opened all places, wherein the store was,and sold to the Egyptians:for the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.
41:57And all countries came to Egypt to buy corn of Joseph, because the famine [was] sore in all lands.

Chapter 42

42:1Then Jacob saw that there [was] food in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, Why gaze you one upon an other?
42:2And he said, Behold, I have heard that there [is] food in Egypt, Get you down there, and buy us food from there, that we may live and not die.
42:3So went Joseph's ten brethren down to buy corn of the Egyptians.
42:4But Benjamin Joseph's brother would not Jacob send with his brethren:for he said,Lest death should befall him.
42:5And the sons of Israel came to buy food among them that came:for there was famine in the land of Canaan.
42:6Now Joseph [was] governor of the land, who sold to all the people of the land:then Joseph's brethren came, and bowed their face to the groud before him.
42:7And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, and made himself strange toward them, and spoke to them roughly, and said to them, Whence come you? Who answered, Out of the land of Canaan, to buy victual.
42:8(Now Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
42:9And Joseph remembered the dreams, which he dreamed of them) and he said to them, You [are] spies, and [are] come to see the weakness of the land.
42:10But they said to him, No, my lord, but to buy victual your servants [are] come.
42:11We are all one man's sons:we mean truly, and your servants are no spies.
42:12But he said to them, No,but you [are] come to see the weakness of the land.
42:13And they said, We your servants [are] twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan:and behold, the youngest [is] this day with our father, and one [is] not.
42:14Again Joseph said to them, This [is] it that I spoke to you, saying, You [are] spies.
42:15Hereby you shall [be] proved:by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from here, except your youngest brother come here.
42:16Send one of you which may let your brother, and you shall [be] kept in prison, that your words may [be] proved, whether there [be] truth in you:or else by the life of Pharaoh you [are] but spies.
42:17So he put them in ward three days.
42:18Then Joseph said to them the third day, This do,and live:for I fear Elohim.
42:19If you [be] true men, let one of your brethren [be] bound in your prison house, and go you, carry food for the famine of your houses:
42:20But bring your younger brother to me,that your words may [be] tried, and that you die not:and they did so.
42:21And they said one to another, We have verily sinned against our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us,and we would not hear him:therefore [is] this trouble come upon us.
42:22And Reuben answered them, saying, Warned I not you, saying, Sin not against the child, and you would not hear? And lo, his blood [is] now required.
42:23(And they [were] not aware that Joseph understood them:for he spoke to them by an interpreter.)
42:24Then he turned from them, and wept, and turned to them again, and communed with them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
42:25So Joseph commanded that they should fill their sacks with wheat, and put every man's money again in his sack, and give them victual for the journey:and thus did he to them.
42:26And they laid their victual upon their asses, and departed from there.
42:27And as one of them opened his sack for to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money:for lo, it [was] in his sacks mouth.
42:28Then he said to his brethren, My money [is] restored:for lo, it [is] even in my sack. And their heart failed them, and they [were] astonished, and said one to another, What [is] this, that Elohim has done to us?
42:29And they came to Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,
42:30The man, who [is] Lord of the land, spoke roughly to us,and put us in prison as spies of the country.
42:31And we said to him, We are true men,and are no spies.
42:32We [be] twelve brethren, sons of our father:one [is] not,and the youngest [is] this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
42:33Then the Lord of the country said to us, Hereby shall I know if you [be] true men:Leave one of your brethren with me,and take food for the famine of your houses and depart,
42:34And bring your youngest brother to me,that I may know that you [are] no spies, but true men:so will I deliver you your brother, and you shall occupy in the land.
42:35And as they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack:and when they and their father saw the bundles of their money, they were afraid.
42:36Then Jacob their father said to them, You have robbed me of my children:Joseph is not,and Simeon is not,and you will take Benjamin:all these things are against me.
42:37Then Reuben answered his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to you again:deliver him to my hand, and I will bring him to you again.
42:38But he said, My son shall not go down with you:for his brother [is] dead, and he [is] left alone:if death come to him by the way which you go, then you shall bring my gray head with sorrow to the grave.

Chapter 43

43:1Now great famine [was] in the land.
43:2And when they had eaten up the victual, which they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, Turn again, and buy us a little food.
43:3And Judah answered him, saying, The man charged us by an oath, saying, Never see my face, except your brother [be] with you.
43:4If you will send our brother with us, we will go down, and buy you food:
43:5But if you will not send him, we will not go down:for the man said to us, Look me not in the face, except your brother [be] with you.
43:6And Israel said, Wherefore deal you so evil with me, as to tell the man, whether you had yet a brother or no?
43:7And they answered, The man asked straitly of ourselves and of our kindred, saying, [Is] your father yet alive? Have you any brother? And we told him according to these words:could we know certainly that he would say, Bring your brother down?
43:8Then said Judah to Israel his father, Send the boy with me,that we may rise and go,and that we may live and not die, both we,and you,and our children.
43:9I will [be] surety for him:of my hand shall you require him. If I bring him not to you,and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
43:10For except we had made this tarying, doubtless by this we had returned the second time.
43:11Then their father Israel said to them, If it must needs [be] so now, do thus:take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels, and bring the man a present, a little present, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
43:12And take double money in your hand, and the money, that [was] brought again in your sacks mouths:carry it again in your hand, lest it [were] some oversight.
43:13Take also your brother and arise, and go again to the man.
43:14And God almighty give you mercy in the sight of the man, that he may deliver you your other brother, and Benjamin:but I shall [be] robbed of my child, as I have [been].
43:15Thus the men took this present, and took twice so much money in their hand with Benjamin, and rose up,and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
43:16And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his steward, Bring these men home and kill meat, and make ready:for the men shall eat with me at noon.
43:17And the man did as Joseph bad,and brought the men to Joseph's house.
43:18Now when the men [were] brought into Joseph's house, they [were] afraid, and said, Because of the money, that came in our sacks mouths at the first time, [are] we brought, that he may picke a quarrel against us,and lay some thing to our charge, and bring us in bondage and our asses.
43:19Therefore came they to Joseph's steward, and communed with him at the door of the house.
43:20And said, Oh syr, we came in deed down here at the first time to buy food,
43:21And as we came to an inn and opened our sacks, behold, every man's money was in his sacks mouth, even our money in full weight, but we have brought it again in our hands.
43:22Also other money have we brought in our hands to buy food, but we cannot tell, who put our money in our sacks.
43:23And he said, Peace [be] to you, fear not:your Elohim and the Elohim of your father has given you that treasure in your sacks, I had your money:and he brought forth Simeon to them.
43:24So the man led them into Joseph's house, and gave them water to wash their feet, and gave their asses provender.
43:25And they made ready their present against Joseph came at noon, (for they heard say, that they should eat bread there)
43:26When Joseph came home, they brought the present into the house to him, which [was] in their hands, and bowed down to the ground before him.
43:27And he asked them of their prosperity, and said, [Is] your father the old man, of whom you told me, in good health? [Is] he yet alive?
43:28Who answered, Your servant our father [is] in good health, he [is] yet alive:and they bowed down, and made obeisance.
43:29And he lifting up his eyes, beheld his brother Benjamin his mothers son,and said, [Is] this your younger brother, of whom you told me? And he said, Elohim [be] merciful to you, my son.
43:30And Joseph made haste (for his affection [was] inflamed toward his brother, and sought where to weep) and entered into his chamber, and wept there.
43:31Afterward he washed his face, and came out,and refrained himself, and said, Set on meat.
43:32And they prepared for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews:for that [was] an abomination to the Egyptians.
43:33So they sat before him:the eldest according to his age,and the youngest according to his youth. And the men marveled among themselves.
43:34And they took times from before him,and sent to them:but Benjamin's times [was] five times so much as any of theirs:and they drunk, and had of the best drink with him.

Chapter 44

44:1Afterward he commanded his steward, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sacks mouth.
44:2And put my cup, I mean the silver cup, in the sacks mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the commandment that Joseph gave him.
44:3And in the morning the men [were] sent away, they, and their asses.
44:4And when they went out of the city not far off, Joseph said to his steward, Up, follow after the men:and when you do overtake them, say to them, Wherefore have you rewarded evil for good?
44:5[Is] that not the cup, wherein my Lord drinks? And in the which he does divine and prophecy? You have done evil in so doing.
44:6And when he overtook them, he said those words to them.
44:7And they answered him, Wherefore says my lord such words? God forbid that your servants should do such a thing.
44:8Behold, the money which we found in our sacks mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan:how then should we steal out of your lords house silver or gold?
44:9With whomever of your servants it be found, let him die,and we also will be my lords bondmen.
44:10And he said, Now then let it be according to your words:he with whom it is found, shall be my servant, and you shall be blameless.
44:11Then at once every man took down his sack to the ground, and every one opened his sack.
44:12And he searched, and began at the eldest and left at the youngest:and the cup [was] found in Benjamin's sack.
44:13Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass,and went again into the city.
44:14So Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house (for he [was] yet there) and they fell before him on the ground.
44:15Then Joseph said to them, What act [is] this, which you have done? Know you not that such a man as I, can divine and prophecy?
44:16Then said Judah, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? Elohim has found out the wickedness of your servants:behold, we [are] servants to my Lord, both we,and he, with whom the cup [is] found.
44:17But he answered, God forbid, that I should do so,but the man, with whom the cup is found, he shall be my servant, and go you in peace to your father.
44:18Then Judah drew near to him,and said, O my Lord, let your servant now speak a word in my lords ears, and let not your wrath [be] kindled against your servant:for you [are] even as Pharaoh.
44:19My Lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?
44:20And we answered my Lord, We have a father that [is] old,and a young child, which he begat in his age:and his brother [is] dead, and he alone [is] left of his mother, and his father loves him.
44:21Now you said to your servants, Bring him to me,that I may set my eye upon him.
44:22And we answered my lord, The child can not depart from his father:for if he leave his father, his father would die.
44:23Then said you to your servants, Except your younger brother come down with you, look in my face no more.
44:24So when we came to your servant our father, and showed him what my lord had said,
44:25And our father said to us, Go again, buy us a little food,
44:26Then we answered, We can not go down:but if our youngest brother go with us, then will we go down:for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother [be] with us.
44:27Then your servant my father said to us, You know that my wife bare me two sons,
44:28And the one went out from me,and I said, Of a surety he [is] torn in pieces, and I saw him not since.
44:29Now you take this also away from me:if death take him, then you shall bring my gray head in sorrow to the grave.
44:30Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the child [be] not with us (seeing that his life depends on the his life)
44:31Then when he shall see that the child is not come, he will die:so shall your servants bring the gray head of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
44:32Doubtless your servant became surety for the child to my father, and said, If I bring him not to you again, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.
44:33Now therefore, I pray you, let me your servant bide for the child, as a servant to my Lord, and let the child go up with his brethren.
44:34For how can I go up to my father, if the child [be] not with me, unless I would see the evil that shall come on my father?

Chapter 45

45:1Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all that stood by him,but he cried, Have forth every man from me. And there tarried not one with him, while Joseph uttered himself to his brethren.
45:2And he wept and cried, so that the Egyptians heard:the house of Pharaoh heard also.
45:3Then Joseph said to his brethren, I [am] Joseph:does my father yet live? But his brethren could not answer him,for they [were] astonished at his presence.
45:4Again, Joseph said to his brethren, Come near, I pray you, to me. And they came near. And he said, I [am] Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.
45:5Now therefore [be] not sad, neither grieved with yourselves, that you sold me here:for Elohim did send me before you for your preservation.
45:6For now two years of famine have [been] through the land, and five years [are] behind, wherein neither shall [be] earing nor harvest.
45:7Wherefore Elohim sent me before you to preserve your posterity in this land, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.
45:8Now the you sent not me here, but Elohim, who has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
45:9Haste you and go up to my father, and tell him, Thus says your son Joseph, Elohim has made me lord of all Egypt:come down to me, tarry not.
45:10And you shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and shall be near me, you and your children, and your children's children, and your sheep, and your beasts, and all that you have.
45:11Also I will nourish you there (for yet remain five years of famine) lest you perish through poverty, you and your household, and all that you have.
45:12And behold, your eyes do see,and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that my mouth speaks to you.
45:13Therefore tell my father of all my honor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen, and make haste, and bring my father here.
45:14Then he fell on his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.
45:15Moreover, he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them:and afterward his brethren talked with him.
45:16And the tidings came to Pharaohs house, so that they said, Joseph's brethren [are] come:and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
45:17Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Say to your brethren, This do you, lade your beasts and depart, go to the land of Canaan,
45:18And take your father, and your households, and come to me,and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat of the fat of the land.
45:19And I command you, Thus do you, take you chariots out of the land of Egypt for your children, and for your wives, and bring your father and come.
45:20Also regard not your stuff:for the best of all the land of Egypt [is] yours.
45:21And the children of Israel did so:and Joseph gave them chariots according to the commandment of Pharaoh:he gave them victual also for the journey.
45:22He gave them all, none except, change of clothing:but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five but of clothing.
45:23And to his father likewise he sent ten he asses laden with the best things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with wheat, and bread and meat for his father by the way.
45:24So sent he his brethren away, and they departed:and he said to them, Fall not out by the way.
45:25Then they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father,
45:26And told him, saying, Joseph [is] yet alive, and he also [is] governor over all the land of Egypt, and Jacob's heart failed:for he believed them not.
45:27And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to the:but when he saw the chariots, which Joseph had sent to carry him, then the spirit of Jacob their father revived.
45:28And Israel said, I have enough:Joseph my son [is] yet alive:I will go and see him yer I die.

Chapter 46

46:1Then Israel took his journey with all that he had,and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifice to the Elohim of his father Isaac.
46:2And Elohim spoke to Israel in a vision by night, saying, Jacob, Jacob. Who answered, I [am] here.
46:3Then he said, I [am] Elohim, the God of your father, fear not to go down into Egypt:for I will there make of you a great nation.
46:4I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes.
46:5Then Jacob rose up from Beersheba:and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their children, and their wives in the chariots, which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
46:6And they took their cattle and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, both Jacob and all his seed with him,
46:7His sons and his sons sons with him, his daughters and his sons daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
46:8And these [are] the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, even Jacob and his sons:Reuben, Jacob's first born.
46:9And the sons of Reuben:Hanoch,and Pallu,and Hezron,and Carmi.
46:10And the sons of Simeon:Jemuel,and Jamin,and Ohad,and Jachin,and Zohar;and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
46:11Also the sons of Levi:Gershon, Kohath,and Merari.
46:12Also the sons of Judah:Er,and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah:(but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan) And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
46:13Also the sons of Issachar:Tola,and Puvah,and Job,and Shimron.
46:14Also the sons of Zebulun:Sered,and Elon,and Jahleel.
46:15These [be] the sons of Leah, which she bare to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the souls of his sons and his daughters [were] thirty and three.
46:16Also the sons of Gad:Ziphion,and Haggi, Shuni,and Ezbon, Eri,and Arodi,and Areli.
46:17Also the sons of Asher:Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister. And the sons of Beriah:Heber, and Malchiel.
46:18These [are] the children of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter:and these she bare to Jacob, even sixteen souls.
46:19The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife [were] Joseph and Benjamin.
46:20And to Joseph in the land of Egypt [were] born Manasseh, and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Pherah prince of On bare to him.
46:21Also the sons of Benjamin:Belah,and Becher,and Ashbel, Gera,and Naaman, Ehi,and Rosh, Muppim,and Huppim,and Ard.
46:22These [are] the sons of Rachel, which [were] born to Jacob, fourteen souls in all.
46:23Also the sons of Dan:Hushim.
46:24Also the sons of Naphtali:Jahzeel,and Guni,and Jezer,and Shillem.
46:25These [are] the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bare these to Jacob, in all, seven souls.
46:26All the souls, that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins (beside Jacob's sons wives) [were] in the whole, three score and six souls.
46:27Also the sons of Joseph, which [were] born him in Egypt, [were] two souls:so that all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, [are] seventy.
46:28The he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to direct his way to Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen.
46:29Then Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet Israel his father, and presented himself to him and fell on his neck, and wept upon his neck a good while.
46:30And Israel said to Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen your face, and that you [are] yet alive.
46:31Then Joseph said to his brethren, and to his fathers house, I will go up and show Pharaoh, and tell him, My brethren and my fathers house, which [were] in the land of Canaan, [are] come to me,
46:32And the men are shepherds, and because they are shepherds, they have brought their sheep and their cattle, and all that they have.
46:33And if Pharaoh call you,and ask you, What is your trade?
46:34Then you shall say, Your servants are men occupied about cattle, from our childhood even to this time, both we and our fathers:that you may dwell in the land of Goshen:for every sheep keeper is an abomination to the Egyptians.

Chapter 47

47:1Then came Joseph and told Pharaoh, and said, My father, and my brethren, and their sheep, and their cattle, and all that they have, [are] come out of the land of Canaan, and behold, they [are] in the land of Goshen.
47:2And Joseph took part of his brethren, even five men,and presented them to Pharaoh.
47:3Then Pharaoh said to his brethren, What [is] your trade? And they answered Pharaoh, Your servants [are] shepherds, both we and our fathers.
47:4They said moreover to Pharaoh,For to sojourn in the land [are] we come:for your servants have no pasture for their sheep, so sore [is] the famine in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, we pray you, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.
47:5Then spoke Pharaoh to Joseph, saying, Your father and your brethren [are] come to you.
47:6The land of Egypt [is] before you:in the best place of the land make your father and your brethren dwell:let the dwell in the land of Goshen:and if you know that there [be] men of activity among them, make them rulers over my cattle.
47:7Joseph also brought Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh. And Jacob saluted Pharaoh.
47:8Then Pharaoh said to Jacob, How old [are] you?
47:9And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The whole time of my pilgrimage is a hundred and thirty years:few and evil have the days of my life been, and I have not attained to the years of the life of my fathers, in the days of their pilgrimages.
47:10And Jacob took leave of Pharaoh, and departed from the presence of Pharaoh.
47:11And Joseph placed his father, and his brethren, and gave them possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, even in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
47:12And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his fathers household with bread, even to the young children.
47:13Now there [was] no bread in all the land:for the famine [was] exceeding sore:so that the land of Egypt, and the land of Canaan [were] famished by reason of the famine.
47:14And Joseph gathered all the money, that [was] found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought, and Joseph laid up the money in Pharaohs house.
47:15So when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, then all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, Give us bread:for why should we die before you? For our money [is] spent.
47:16Then said Joseph, Bring your cattle, and I will give you for your cattle, if your money [be] spent.
47:17So they brought their cattle to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, and for the flocks of sheep, and for the herds of cattle, and for the asses:so he fed them with bread for all their cattle that year.
47:18But when the year [was] ended, they came to him the next year, and said to him, We will not hide from my lord, that since our money [is] spent, and my lord has the herds of the cattle, there [is] nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies and our ground.
47:19Why shall we perish in your sight, both we,and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be bond to Pharaoh:therefore give us seed, that we may live and not die,and that the land go not to waste.
47:20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh:for the Egyptians sold every man his ground because the famine was sore upon the:so the land became Pharaohs.
47:21And he removed the people to the cities, from one side of Egypt even to the other.
47:22Only the land of the Priests bought he not:for the Priests had an ordinary of Pharaoh, and they did eat their ordinary, which Pharaoh gave them:wherefore they sold not their ground.
47:23Then Joseph said to the people, Behold, I have bought you this day,and your land for Pharaoh:lo, here [is] seed for you:sow therefore the ground.
47:24And of the increase you shall give the fifth part to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be yours for the seed of the field, and for your meat, and for them of your households, and for your children to eat.
47:25Then they answered, You have saved our lives:let us find grace in the sight of my Lord, and we will be Pharaohs servants.
47:26Then Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which was not Pharaohs.
47:27And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen:and they had their possessions therein, and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
47:28Moreover, Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, so that the whole age of Jacob was a hundred forty and seven year.
47:29Now when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph, and said to him, If I have now found grace in your sight, put your hand now under my thigh, and deal mercifully and truly with me:bury me not, I pray you, in Egypt.
47:30But when I shall sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burial. And he answered, I will do as you have said.
47:31The he said, Swear to me. And he swore to him. And Israel worshipped towards the beds head.

Chapter 48

48:1Again after this, one said to Joseph, Lo, your father is sick:then he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
48:2Also one told Jacob, and said, Behold, your son Joseph [is] come to you,and Israel took his strength to him and sat upon the bed.
48:3Then Jacob said to Joseph, God almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me.
48:4And he said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful, and will multiply you,and will make a great number of people of you,and will give this land to your seed after you for an everlasting possession.
48:5And now your two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, which are born to you in the land of Egypt, before I came to you into Egypt, shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are mine.
48:6But the lineage, which you have begotten after them, shall be yours:they shall be called after the names of their brethren in their inheritance.
48:7Now when I came from Padan, Rachel died upon my hand in the land of Canaan, by the way when there [was] but half a days journey of ground to come to Ephrath:and I buried her there in the way to Ephrath:the same [is] Bethlehem.
48:8Then Israel beheld Joseph's sons and said, Whose [are] these?
48:9And Joseph said to his father, They [are] my sons, which Elohim has given me here. Then he said, I pray you, bring them to me,that I may bless them:
48:10(For the eyes of Israel [were] dim for age, so that he could not well see) Then he caused them to come to him,and he kissed them and embraced them.
48:11And Israel said to Joseph, I had not thought to have seen your face:yet lo, Elohim has showed me also your seed.
48:12And Joseph took them away from his knees, and did reverence down to the ground.
48:13Then took Joseph them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israels left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israels right hand, so he brought them to him.
48:14But Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it on Ephraim's head, which [was] the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head (directing his hands of purpose) for Manasseh [was] the elder.
48:15Also he blessed Joseph and said, The Elohim, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the Elohim, which has fed me all my life long to this day, bless you.
48:16The Angel, which has delivered me from all evil, bless the children, and let my name [be] named upon them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, that they may grow as fish into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
48:17But when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him:and he stayed his fathers hand to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.
48:18And Joseph said to his father, Not so, my father, for this [is] the eldest:put your right hand upon his head.
48:19But his father refused, and said, I know well, my son, I know well:he shall be also a people, and he shall be great likewise:but his younger brother shall be greater than he,and his seed shall be full of nations.
48:20So he blessed them that day,and said, In you Israel shall bless, and say, Elohim make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
48:21Then Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I die,and Elohim shall be with you,and bring you again to the land of your fathers.
48:22Moreover, I have given to the one portion above your brethren, which I gate out of the hand of the Amorite by my sword and by my bow.

Chapter 49

49:1Then Jacob called his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall come to you in the last days.
49:2Gather yourselves together, and hear, the sons of Jacob, and hearken to Israel your father.
49:3Reuben my eldest son, you [are] my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:
49:4You [were] light as water:you shall not [be] excellent, because you went up to your fathers bed:then did you defile my bed, your dignity [is] gone.
49:5Simeon and Levi, brethren in evil, the instruments of cruelty [are] in their habitations.
49:6Into their secret let not my soul come:my glory, [be] not you joined with their assembly:for in their wrath they slew a man,and in their self will they digged down a wall.
49:7Cursed [be] their wrath, for it [was] fierce, and their rage, for it [was] cruel:I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
49:8You Judah, your brethren shall praise you:your hand shall [be] in the neck of your enemies:your fathers sons shall bow down to you.
49:9Judah, as a Lions whelp shall you come up from the spoil, my son. He shall lie down and couch as a Lion, and as a Lioness:Who shall stir him up?
49:10The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a Lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and the people shall [be] gathered to him.
49:11He shall bind his Ass foale to the vine, and his Asses colt to the best vine. He shall wash his garment in wine, and his cloak in the blood of grapes.
49:12His eyes shall [be] red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
49:13Zebulun shall dwell by the sea side, and he shall [be] a haven for ships:and his border shall [be] to Sidon.
49:14Issachar shall [be] a strong ass, couching down between two burdens:
49:15And he shall see that rest is good, and that the land is pleasant, and he shall bow his shoulder to bear, and shall be subject to tribute.
49:16Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel.
49:17Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder by the path, by the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.
49:18O YHWH, I have waited for Your salvation.
49:19Gad, a host of men shall overcome him,but he shall overcome at the last.
49:20Concerning Asher, his bread shall [be] fat,and he shall give pleasures for a king.
49:21Naphtali shall [be] a hinde let go, giving goodly words.
49:22Joseph shall [be] a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by the well side:the small boughs shall run upon the wall.
49:23And the archers grieved him,and shot against him and hated him.
49:24But his bow abode strong, and the hands of his arms [were] strengthened, by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob, of whom [was] the feeder appointed, by the stone of Israel,
49:25Even by the God of your father, who shall help you,and by the almighty, who shall bless you with heavenly blessings from above, with blessings of the deep, that lies beneath, with blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.
49:26The blessings of your father shall be stronger than the blessings of my elders:to the end of the hills of the world they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the top of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
49:27Benjamin shall ravine as a wolf:in the morning he shall devour the pray, and at night he shall divide the spoil.
49:28All these [are] the twelve tribes of Israel, and thus their father spoke to them, and blessed them:every one of them blessed he with a several blessing.
49:29And he charged them and said to them, I [am] ready to [be] gathered to my people:bury me with my fathers in the cave, that [is] in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
49:30In the cave that [is] in the field of Machpelah besides Mamre in the land of Canaan:which cave Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession to bury in.
49:31There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife:there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife:and there I buried Leah.
49:32The purchase of the field and the cave that [is] therein, [was] bought of the children of Heth.
49:33Thus Jacob made an end of giving charge to his sons, and plucked up his feet into the bed and gave up the ghost, and [was] gathered to his people.

Chapter 50

50:1Then Joseph fell upon his fathers face and wept upon him,and kissed him.
50:2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalmed Israel.
50:3So forty days [were] accomplished (for so long did the days of them that [were] embalmed last) and the Egyptians embalmed him seventy days.
50:4And when the days of his mourning [were] past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If I have now found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, and say,
50:5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die, bury me in my grave, which I have made me in the land of Canaan:now therefore let me go, I pray you,and bury my father, and I will come again.
50:6Then Pharaoh said, Go up and bury your father, as he made you to swear.
50:7So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all the servants of Pharaoh, both the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt.
50:8Likewise all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his fathers house:only their children, and their sheep, and their cattle left they in the land of Goshen.
50:9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen:and they were an exceeding great company.
50:10And they came to Goren Atad, which [is] beyond Jordan, and there they made a great and exceeding sore lamentation:and he mourned for his father seven days.
50:11And when the Canaanites the inhabitants of the land saw the mourning in Goren Atad, they said, This [is] a great mourning to the Egyptians:wherefore the name thereof [was] called Abel Mizraim, which [is] beyond Jordan.
50:12So his sons did to him, according as he had commanded them:
50:13For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which cave Abraham bought with the field, to [be] a place to bury in, of Ephron the Hittite besides Mamre.
50:14Then Joseph returned into Egypt, he and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after that he had buried his father.
50:15And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father [was] dead, they said, It may [be] that Joseph will hate us,and will pay us again all the evil, which we did to him.
50:16Therefore they sent to Joseph, saying, Your father commanded before his death, saying,
50:17Thus shall you say to Joseph, Forgive now, I pray you, the trespass of your brethren, and their sin:for they rewarded you evil. And now, we pray you, forgive the trespass of the servants of your fathers Elohim. And Joseph wept, when they spoke to him.
50:18Also his brethren came to him,and fell down before his face, and said, Behold, we [be] your servants.
50:19To whom Joseph said, Fear not:for [am] not I under Elohim?
50:20When you thought evil against me, Elohim disposed it to good, that he might bring to pass, as it [is] this day,and save much people alive.
50:21Fear not now therefore, I will nourish you,and your children:and he comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.
50:22So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he,and his fathers house:and Joseph lived a hundred and ten year.
50:23And Joseph saw Ephraim's children, even to the third generation:also the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh [were] brought up on Joseph's knees.
50:24And Joseph said to his brethren, I [am] ready to die,and Elohim will surely visit you,and bring you out of this land, to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
50:25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, Elohim will surely visit you,and you shall carry my bones from here.
50:26So Joseph died, when he [was] a hundred and ten year old:and they embalmed him and put him in a chest in Egypt.
