Chapter 1

1:1The Elder to the beloved Gaius, whom [I] love in the truth.
1:2Beloved, [I] wish chiefly that you prospered and fared well as your soul prospers.
1:3For [I] rejoiced greatly when the brethren came, and testified of the truth that is in you, how you walk in the truth.
1:4[I] have no greater joy than these, that is, to hear that my sons walk in verity.
1:5Beloved, you do faithfully, whatever you do to the brethren, and to strangers,
1:6Which bare witness of your love before the Churches. Whom if you bring on their journey as it beseems according to Theos, you shall do well,
1:7Because that for his Names sake they went forth, and took nothing of the Gentiles.
1:8We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be helpers to the truth.
1:9[I] wrote to the Church:but Diotrephes which loves to have the preeminence among them, receives us not.
1:10Wherefore if [I] come, [I] will call to your remembrance his deeds which he does, pratling against us with malicious words, and not therewith content, neither he himself receives the brethren, but forbidds them that would, and thrusts them out of the Church.
1:11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good:he that does well, is of Theos:but he that does evil, has not seen Theos.
1:12Demetrius has good report of all men,and of the truth itself:yes, and we ourselves bear record, and you know that our record is true.
1:13[I] have many things to write:but [I] will not with yncke and pen write to you:
1:14For [I] trust [I] shall shortly see you,and we shall speak mouth to mouth. Peace be with you. The friends salute you. Greet the friends by name.
